I'm going to spend the winter there, but just wondered how many years I could actually live over there with 50K in Euros... I mean on a budget. I don't care about flashy hotels etc. Just want to surf, windsurf and mingle :)

Thailand is shitty for surf & windsurf unfortunately, but I'm going to the Philippines this winter and I'm sure there are some other options too in that area for surf.

Something like that. 3rd world maybe cheaper than EU and US, but not that much. And more and more things becomes even more expensive.

Okay, maybe 3 years.

About 2 years if you want to live like a king

In Europe that money would last me 2 years, I spend about 25K per year here, probably less even. So I'm sure it's gotta be more then 2 years in SEA... I don't need much.

Considering I spend about 25K per year in Europe, how much will a comparable lifestyle cost me per year in SEA?
I'm talking long term stay, so I'd rent houses instead of staying in hotels and stuff like that...

Anyone doing this or has done it?

Hey g1, that looks like a cool site and article, thanks. I'll check it out. Btw I'd make your guide in video format. I say that because I have recently learned how to cook and it was due to a site that does video recepies. The great thing about that site to me is that each recepie is only 1 min long! So you don't have to sift trough a long video. And yeah, ~1 minute is really all that's needed for a lot of recepies. Check out my favorite dish on that site (it's a Dutch site but you can follow the video): nasi recept uit Bali - Recepten - Kookse.tv

Just an idea :) Video also increases perceived value of course. P.S. is that you living in Bangkok for $285.06 Per Month?

.Hack clearly said "if you want to live like a king"... do you live like a king currently in Europe with 25k a year?
Yeah but I said "on a budget" in my post, that's what I was after. I don't live like a king, don't care to. Just wanna have fun, don't need king size for that.

5 years and you would be living very decent. In comparison in some parts of European union people live on 500Eur a month (average salary). I am pretty sure Asia is cheaper place than Europe (even if its East Europe). So maximum 500Eur per month on an average living, meaning 8.3 years. 10+ years on a tight budget (comfortable tight though).

Ok so after reading that "live like a king for 285$" we can bump it up to 20 years :)

I live in a poor area of SE Asia, and we blow through about $3000 CAD (~2150 Euro) per month. Our lives are good and worry free, but I'd hardly call it living like a king.

Rent is cheap -- 4brdm, 2 storey house for $160/month. Electric is about the same as Canada at $80 - $100/month. We have three dogs though, and they eat up about $800/month.

Internet is $160/month, but that's just because I got pissed off one day. I think their cheapest package is $23/month. After a health scare last month that put me in bed for a week, I no longer eat street market food, so my grocery bill is probably more than what I'd pay in Canada. The good stuff isn't in demand up here, so it's not cheap. A good dinner and night out with a few friends can easily put you back $200 or $300, same as Canada.

You can definitely leave cheaper than we do, but that lifestyle gets very old very quickly. A typical minimum wage job like Starbucks earns you around $250/month, so you can definitely live on the cheap, although I wouldn't recommend it.

I heard the "in" place right now in SEA is Vietnam. Apparently it's so cheap that even Chinese guys are heading down there to live like an expat lol

Very unproportional strange living there ^:))

Rent is cheap is hell, is it really so ? As well as how 3 dogs could eat upto $800/month ???

Food, yeah, it costs same already, it was cheap just 3 years ago and even more 7 years ago!

Why $160/month internet have something in common with being "pissed off one day " ?)) simply switch to $23/month

Yep. You won't find those prices on the internet, but it's that cheap all over. Culture here hasn't caught up with modern renting practices, so they don't advertise online or in the newspaper. It's word of mouth, or the house owner will put a small plastic "for rent" sign on the utility pole on their street, but that's it.

14 month old lab, and two growing pups. Food, treats, flea medicine, shampoo, flea powder, towels, doctor visits, etc. It adds up. But yeah, I treat them pretty good, and the locals at the market laugh at me for it. "maa farang! maa farang!" (white man's dog! white man's dog!) I'll hear as I'm picking up the dog's dinner, and spending more on it then they make all day.

Because it was *up, down, up down*, sometimes good speed, sometimes slow as shit. One day I got pissed off, and told them to give me their commercial package. Now internet is good.

that being said I never been in country where people tried to hustle me that much, quite annoying that you have to be on your guard that much. Even my Viet friends who are raised over seas and come back with an accent on their Vietnamese gets hustled . There are def better places to be in SEA

Or you could go to Marbella and ball on €1,000 bottles of champagne.
