How many of you know how to do work around the house?

I do whatever. When I was a kid my mom had a lot of rentals and I was always working on them. Then working with her handyman I learned a lot. I bought a couple of my own and used to flip houses.

I used to have a contractors license and had 8 mexicans doing sheetrock for me. I worked for a commercial general contractor here in seattle and picked up all the mexicans for side work. I actually enjoyed taping/mudding, smoke a bowl, crank the music and just smooth shit out, very relaxing. Hanging and sanding sucks dick though.

I also do plumbing, electric, and carpentry. Used to do a lot of woodworking. It's rewarding to be able to build things, and sheetrock is actually rewarding when you cover up some nasty shit with a nice clean smooth surface.

I've ran my share of sewer augers fishing out condoms and tampons and even grocery bags from angry tenants who were evicted, one faggot put marbles in a condom and stuffed it down the sink past the trap. Also have layed carpet and replaced dozens of windows. Did the tile in my bathroom, refinished my attic (built staircase, drywalled, new floor, new electric)

Flipping houses I used to go to lowes contractor store, where you could order double hung double paned windows custom made to your dimensions for around $140 each. I would go through the house, rip out all the existing windows and trim on the inside, take the measurement, order the windows, then just plop 20 new windows in, shim them and slap some trim on the inside. It took a day to rip out and a day to install with me and a skilled handyman, and added an easy $10k+ above cost to the value of the house. Siding was another good one, go right over some nasty shit and it looks like new for a while.

So just curious how many of you know how to fix shit around the house?

Not talking about changing a light bulb. Most blondes can do that.

Talking about changing a switch, socket, door handle, laying tile, building a shelf, putting up a ceiling fan, etc..

Why? You hiring?

I remodelled a whole kitchen once, plaster, bricklaying, fitted all the kitchen units, the wiring back to the fuse box, the gas pipes (paid to get them checked), the floor and beneath the floor. Never fucking again.

My Victorian garden wall was falling down through age and it looked a simple job. 2100 Victorian bricks later ... never fucking again!

There's some things I'll pay people to do.

Sometimes I like to handle stuff on my own just to change things up and get away from the computer.

Had my water-pump go out in my truck last month. I could have paid a mechanic $300 to fix it and focused on work, or do it myself for $30 and about 5 hours.

It's technically -EV, I would have made more money working and paying someone else. But I got my hands dirty, I did it right, it's fixed, I got a break from the grind and I learned some new shit.

I was a Civil Engineer when I was younger so I have experience all over the board, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, h-vac, etc.

I won't touch a lot of it. But I like to dig into projects and learn new stuff sometimes. Also, +1 for Youtube, you can find step-by-step vids that show you how to do about anything.

I can get guys here for a couple bucks an hour so no need :)

But I just thought it would be an interesting topic and something different to talk about in the offline world.

I'm the same way. I've got the space but I think my wife would punch me if I put a project car in our extra stall - we both know I'd never finish it lol. Eventually I do what to restore a VW van - got kids and with camping and beach going it would be fantastic.

Frank Kern fan too I'm assuming? :P

This isn't the exact video I was referring to, but I guess this will give you a basic idea.

For the inside, I'm pretty much useless. Can paint a room, drywall, and couple other basic things, but not much.

Outside though I'm pretty decent. Give me a plot of clay, a kubota, and a cell phone with supplier's contacts, and I'll turn it into a 5 star yard for you, complete with fence, walk paths, interlocking brick firepit, fountain + fish pond, perfectly sloped sod, beautiful shrub beds, etc.

Dad owns a small construction/remodeling business in my hometown. Learned a lot from working with him, underrated trait to basically be able to fix anything that goes wrong with your home... provided that you have the tools of course.

Fuck, where do I start...

Top Pro, over 7 trades at journeyman or master level, and the rest as a decent wrench that you wouldn't mind putting on your payroll. Started as a Local 250 UBCJ Carpenter working high-rise commercial in Chicago in the 70's. Navy made me a hardhat diver and electrician's mate with EOD. Most of the last 30 yrs as a Full-on commercial and Industrial General, Electrical, and Mechanical Contractor. Licensed in three states. Certified Process welder. Fire Alarm systems expert. Bicsi regged RCDD/Lan. Nicet Level 4. Blah blah blah. I've done every single trade at a working level in my day. Once you've got a couple down, the rest are easy, at least for me. Explain the goal to me and I will get there.

Fell into this online shit totally by accident, but it got good enough to let me shitcan all the stress of having employees (26 field, 4 office at one time), and focus on building wealth for myself and family instead.

Don't do ANY of that shit for other people now- strictly work for my own account, developing properties (on and offline) and teaching my 15 yo (16 next week!!!) son everything I know so he can carry on our small but growing commercial real estate and web portfolios. That's what I do with my spare time, (and my mad online monies) lol. Now if I could just find time to update my fuckin jamoola websites...

Jeebus, that got long. Sorry bros. :music07:

Jack of all trades, master of a couple.

Big jobs I generally pay someone else to handle though as being a perfectionist it takes too long and I don't have the patience.

you didnt have any chores as a kid?

I did. Although I remember at 13 years old telling my parents that having me do chores was an inefficient use of my time; it would be more efficient to let me spend that time making money online and hiring somebody for $8/hour to do those chores for me.

That's always been my philosophy for as long as I can remember.
