How Much Does Your Accountant Charge?

I will pay around $600 and I filed as a sole proprietor for '08. My wife and I sat down and went through all revenues and expenses. The accountant pretty much just had to type the numbers into his computer.

I can see how it would end up being a lot more if you just give them a box full cc statements and screenshots of your domain/hosting expenses and other stuff.

Im sure you learned your lesson to spend $69 dollars and get quickbooks and to shop around before putting your balls in a vice when taxes are due today. not wait to ask him how much 2 days before deadline. Rules 1. Shop around when buying a CAR, when looking for an ACCOUNTANT, a LAWYER, Investment Manager, or if go to a doctor and you find out you have cancer get a 2nd opinion that fucking simple. "ALWAYS SHOP AROUND" did you get fleeced when you bought your car too? While this fucking piece of shit accountant charging 6k dude come on think with the head. I would get my indian team to add his email to every fucking free newsletter his inbox would be full in no time

I haven't got my total bill yet, but it's usually around $3k for my corp, another $2.5k for my trust and $600 for my personal.

I just switched to a guy that charged $3700, but he saved me 25k compared to the other guy that charged $300. So for me it was worth it

FTW - who cares what it costs - it's what it saves you that counts. If you have a simple corporation w/few depreciable assets do your taxes yourself.

If you have a real business w/multiple high dollar depreciation schedules paying a good accountant is up there on the list of excellent investments with a good lawyer and a good insurance agent.

A buddy of mine always laughed at me for paying a good attorney to go over my documents - until he was sued and lost a sizable portion of his business asset value.

Comparing what you pay for an accountant is a waste - much like comparing what each of us pay for PPC or SEO. Depends on what your business plan is doing and what you want to make.

you got taken cause you went to him at the height of tax season, with no bookkeeping, and asked for his services in a pinch. it makes sense.

assuming he did a good job, saved you money on taxes, and provided a good service, you shouldn't feel too bad about the price you paid. next time be better prepared and this won't happen. there are many things to feel bad about overpaying for (cars, houses, toys, etc..) but (over)paying for an important service (which is itself a deduction, btw) is not something to dwell on unnecessarily.

he does sound like a prick in that email, but considering you challenged his work rates, i'm not surprised. if some kid came back after i'd provided services, and wanted justification for my rates, i would be defensive (and pissed off) too.

Sorry dude - owning quickbooks is not the same as having a good tax accountant. If you're making more than $100k a year (and any good businessman should be) a good tax accountant will easily pay for themself. Plus - if you had a real business, you'd know that corporate taxes were due 3/15.

And - if you're just getting started and operating as a sole prop. even your personal return has an automatic extension past the magic '4/15 deadline'. The only thing really due on 4/15 are the taxes owed - you'll just pay a penalty on any tax amounts that you underpaid before the 4/15 date.

Assuming he charges $200 an hour, that means he spent a full week working on your taxes 8 hours a day, which means he's either a fucking retard, or just trying to rip ya.

I haven't gotten my invoice yet but I was told it won't be over $1k for personal + s-corp.

I emailed him about the price being high and he said :

I run my own accounting practice and this guy's a douche. Unless he's doing these returns with paper and pencil, you know how long it takes to calculate a SEP contribution and estimated payments? A nanosecond.

So unless you took a 2 year-old to his office and plopped them down at the corner of his desk with a jelly doughnut and a drink box that squirted all over the room, there's no justifying those fees.

I will admit I've charged excessive fees when I want to discourage an asshat client like that from ever returning.

Quicken should be used as starting point doesn't mean final and expensive accountant doesn't mean good accountant even when u make 2mill or 50k a u need expense tracking
