I know a lot of people dont like discussing their earnings on a public forum like this, but how profitable can blog sites really be? Adsense doesnt payout much so I'm not sure how someone could make a living off blogging. I've been thinking of starting a site just as an experiment but I wanted to know if it'd even be worth my time. Anyone making $100+ per day off these sites?

Yes. People make money from blogs. It takes a lot of work and time to be able to make a living from a blog though.

Paid reviews and direct advertiser purchases will beat the shit out of Adsense for most blogs. But, weblogs inc. apparently was pulling in over $1 million a year from adsense before AOL bought them. However, that was a whole network and included some of the top blogs on the web.

Hi,

Blogging can make money, but the biggest problem that people make is to post ads everywhere on their blog, making it so obvious that their first intention of having the blog is to make money.

I originally did this, and then decided to take a new perspective. I get 7,000 visits to my blog a month talking about various topics in business/marketing/web 2.0 events, execs, but never mention my business. I don't have any advertisements, but the payoff is still high - people are talking about me, I'm getting instant credibility when I meet people who've read my blog, and my pool of connections is much higher.

I talk about this in further depth - Jessica Mah Meets World » Why should you own a blog? Why don’t I have ads?

Hope this helped,

made a couple hundred in the first month for one of my first real blogs...now that it is kinda neglicted only pulling $50 or so per month.

Just shows that trying a new thing can always lead to more experience and knowledge, plus unexpected income.

My best success is having a blog that is part of a larger site that also has static pages.

The static pages bring in the most sales on this domain (a few k a month), but the blog is content rich and generates linkbacks for the domain so it pulls everything up in the SE.

Plus I link to static pages whevenever I can with targetted text, and it helps...it helps....

So I don't have a blog only that makes a lot, but the blog is the fuel for the rest of the site.

As long as you provide a constant stream of unique content, you'll make money.(unless you do a mesothelioma asbestos lawyers skin cancer blog). On my most recent blog I was making about $10-$12/day after 3 weeks (3-5 posts per day) just by posting about good deals I found both online and offline.

I ended up owing like $1500 to the IRS and had to sell it so I could pay up though :(

If you do decide to blog, make these your new friends:
pingomatic.com
pingoat.com
technorati.com
digg.com

I know someone who left their Brand Manager job to do blogs full-time... which sure as hell says something about the earning potential!

Blog sponsorship is a major way of getting major exposure and income, and also the more blogs become more commercial, a lot of big advertisers want to get in on that action. AdSense is tiddlywinks really, targeted advertising, good sponsors if possible, killer content, slick design and anything that prevents a blog from looking like a spam board all go a long way in making it a goldmine.

You know, a bit of PR can never hurt either - once you have a decent traffic rate, promote that baby like anything and get people talking. Big boy advertisers like to feel special, so make your blog the coolest thing they've seen and they'll beg you to get on it.

What domain/site are you talking about?

Could you link to some of these please? For the visually learning noobs among us.

No, I don't want to post my ranked blogs because it invites spam.

I have a domain with static landing pages that are optimized to sell. I also have a WP blog on the site which is optimized to get ranked and generate traffic.

I use the blog to feed sales pages, and to point to the sales pages with good anchor text I want to get found on. It works. It works best on domains that have aged a year. If I get the right keyword, it can work on domains that are newer.

johnchow makes like 15k a month I believe

i've heard chow makes A LOT more than that a month...but i guess he only knows for sure

obviously there is money in blogs considering there rising popularity the past few years and there are a number of ways to attack the blog world...one being having 1 - 3 specialized niche blogs you spend all your time on and do all the writing / technical / marketing yourself, or you could build a large network of auto updating blogs covering many niche's...or you could try to do a bit of both which i'm trying to do :rasta:

regardless of how you approach blogging...you can bank on putting in a lot of time and work

Phil, conversions don't happen through simply posting an article and a whole bunch of big ugly banners in the sidebars of your blog. People read blogs for information, if you're lucky they will shop while they are there. Everyone in this thread has pretty much given you all the answers you need. Blog about a subject and offer more information about the items you're trying to promote. Trying posting links to those items at the end of your articles. And update it as often as possible using keywords in your content.

And for the love of Mary, don't use ugly colors or something like a gothic layout if you're trying to promote products like diapers or kids toys. You'd think anyone could figure this out, but some affiliates just never learn or they just don't bother to ask any questions first.

I own tons of blogs and the adsense earnings is crappy.. but I have lots of international traffic so the adsense inventory is scarce

Private ad sales is the key, employ a ad agency to sell your ads, do network wide campaigns

Yeah John Chow is making the most from his blog, he can't add anything else he already doesn't have.. Monetized to the bottom!

That's why his content sucks.. I still don't know why I still read his blog :rasta:

i agree that his content sucks big time. one in 10 posts has something useful or interesting....everything else is old news or plain dumb. he's such a money whore too - all the reviewme things he does, buy him a beer, and other little things he'll do for cash when the blog is making 5 figures a month....plus his other ventures.
i don't know how he got 5k subscribers with that crap.

but how many people can 'do it right'

if i bust my balls, like seriously read my shit, put some sweat into it, and not cut corners can i atleast see some sort of steady revenue?
