How much to ask for webmaster job ?

Through a connection I got offered a webmaster job for a fortune 500 company. I would act as a consultant and coordinate the rollout of a number of country specific consumer (mini-)sites. It will be my job to manage a number of webdesigners in each country and make sure everything gets done and is according to the required standards.

I never worked for a company this large before and I have no idea how much to ask.

What do you guys think an appropriate hourly salary would be ?

(We have yet to discuss the more specific aspects so I have no clear idea how long the job will take so that's why I ask hourly salary ...)
 


I would figure it out but not hourly eww get ur monies worth and do extra shit on the side
 
What city, how large of company, how many other developers, what's your experience? Kind of tough to tell you market rate if we don't know your market.

Take what they offer + 30%. You need insurance, pay more in taxes when you go it alone, and cover your own expenses, so make sure you factor those into the decision.
 
don't go hourly, go salary
You could go for a set salary with bonus's depending on what goals are met, or just a set salary .
I work for Playboy as a webmaster, but I can't tell you what I make, but I can boost my income by promoting sites on my own which I do. Also in getting with a 500 company, will it open other opportunities?

I asked hourly because I have to discuss the specifics some more with them but from what I gather It will basically be a part-time job.

I am not going to name the company but let's just say that it's a big multinational in the chemicals vertical. As far as my experience goes : I have run a webdesign company for about 3 years and worked as a programmer for 8 years.

They basically need somebody who knows the technical aspects of designing a website to communicate their needs to the actual developers.

Also in getting with a 500 company, will it open other opportunities?

This is the thing ... I don't want to ask too much and lose the job because this will be a great reference for my company
 
Ditto CShoemaker. If you are going to be an independent consultant, you should be looking for $60/hr minimum. You'll be paying for your own taxes and benefits like bb_wolfe said.

If the job requires some technical skills, you could push it up to $90-100/hr.
 
Don't view this as they are hiring YOU - they are hiring a company to do a single position.

A good rule of thumb is if you think you would charge xx dollars an hour is to triple it (or quadruple).

1/3 to pay the employee (you)
1/3 to cover taxes, etc...
1/3 for profit.

If this is a real fortune 500 company and they are accepting bids or offers from other 'real' development firms that's what they are going to expect.

If you were doing it all from home, had a boss that didn't know anything about it, only had to do like simple html/css shit, and could play Halo half the time on the clock $40/hour would be worth it. If you ever have to go into the office I would start out at $70/hour then go up from there depending on what they want you to do.
 
The most important thing is no matter what your demand is, demand it with confidence.

Make them believe that by paying you your demanded salary, they're actually getting a bargain.
