How Often To Update?

For those of you with blog-type sites, what do you find is the optimal amount to update? I want to add new content to mine enough to keep peoples' interest, but not so much as to spam up their feeds.

I try to add information at least once a week; I prefer twice a week but I don't always have the time. . Sometimes, when I do have extra time, I will write up 3 or 4 blog posts in advance for the upcoming weeks so that I'm not scrambling to get something written up.

Depends what you're trying to do. I read a case study by a guy who was trying to rank a brand new site at #1 for the term 'live help desk' (it was actually a challenge that someone put up on here. Don't the link).

He updated his content every day for 39 days to get to the number one spot. Obviously, there was a bunch of other stuff he was doing but he credits a lot of his success to this.

If you just want to keep your readers happy, I'd say once or twice a week. If you're pushing to get to #1 for a particular keyword, then I'd suggest every day.

Also, there is a school of thought that suggests that if you are updating your blog once or twice a week, you should try to keep the updates to the same day each week. The theory is that this then establishes a routine for your readers (in a similar way that weekly tv shows become destination viewing for some people).

I update one of my blogs three times a week and the other one almost every day. I think twice a week is the minimum you'd need, though.

Aside from thinking about ranking, maybe bloggers should also look into the preferences of their subscribers.

Personally I would prefer to recieve updates from my RSS feeds once a week.

I think subscribers will benefit better when the pace that their feed is updated in the same pace they can spare a time to sit down and read your post. After all it is your readers and subscribers that you want to turn to clients. once or twice is a good rate that keeps readers waiting and excited on what you have to offer them next. Flooding updates, most of the time, ends up in lost of interest from a subscriber esp when his/her inbox is overflowing with stuff to read.

My question is, is there a way subscribers can tweak update settings to their preference?
