How to break my night owl ways?

When i have kids i will change my schedule but right I go to bed around 4am mainly because I am more productive at night. Since i moved to NYC I can't get work done in the day. Too much going on and they are constructing a building right next to me. So I go to bed around 4 or 5 and usually wake up around 11am.

melatonin. it gets produced naturally by the body when nightfall comes and you are low on energy. when you try sleeping when the sun is rising, you don't get as much natural melatonin produced by the body and you'll have trouble sleeping. that's why eye masks are gold for sleeping during the day (if you must). deprive yourself of sleep one night, then try to stay up extra late the next day, and use melatonin if you need help, or just jerk off.

Do not use medication as a long term alternative. It could have dangerous side effects in the long run.

The human body is a delicate system of chemicals, pumping it too much with any sort of medication/etc can harm it.

I bet your life sucks...

lol at last post. But thinking about it - "Imagine what those pumpkins do with each other when they're alone!" I'm not sure you can do anything with anyone if you're alone. Strictly speaking.

But yeah, it's good to know that others are major night owls, too. Although I think owls tend to go to bed at around 5 a.m, actually.

To throw in my 2 cents worth, I'm not sure that staying up 24 hours will work as a 'cure'. Sure, you'll go turn in at reasonable time after that kind of stint, but just stay up late again when you've recovered.

've heard that the only real way is to force yourself to go to bed a little bit earlier each night until you're back to a reasonable time.

But I suppose it's like smoking. You've got to want to stop. And why bother if you're actually enjoying yourself and getting stuff done?

One of the reasons I started developing websites and working online was so I could wokr through the night. I enjoy begin able to go to sleep at 5 am and wake up around 2-3pm. I still have plenty of daytime hours to do errands, and have the entire quiet night to work, watch TV, or read, etc.

But is you want to break this habit, one of the methods above will work perfectly. Tomorrow, don't get any sleep at all. Come 10 pm or so you will be tired as hell (if not, take melatonin or tylenol PM) and sleep through the night like everyone else. That should start a good sleeping cycle.

^ i prefer the 1-2pm --> 5-6am routine also. works out exactly for the reasons you mentioned.

Well I'm running the experiement now.

I was up until 7:30 AM last night, and then woke up at 11:00 AM - and I'm still up - I'm kinda tired, but I should be way more tired.

I think it's because I spent like 4 hours playing Battlefield 2142...I read somewhere recently that playing video games puts you in a brain wave pattern of sleep, where your brain actually gets relaxation, and it's actually good for you.

But I also read somewhere recently that rare exotic cocao chocolate is a good investment o.O

Didn't you just say you were newly married? So, you're awake then the rest of us sleep, and when you're awake you're playing video games. So... what does your wife do with all this time you have to yourself? ;-)

Honestly, I am the same way, I have tried many many times to get on a normal schedule, but with no success. Sometimes I can get myself onto a regular sleep schedule for a week or 2 at a time, but it never lasts. I feel more productive at night just like you.

Not sure if this is your issue, but it's mine: since this business is 100% commission based, if I am not making $, I don't sleep. I sleep great when I have a good system going, but every few weeks/months/whatever when the system stops working, I don't sleep until my body crashes. It sucks, but is also a work ethic many of us have that is sure to bring us success.

As with my new job starting soon, I will be required to get up before noon, and thus I'll go from 8 hrs of sleep to 5-7 hours, and I'll have to stop going to bed at 5 am.

How do we roll with back? Most likely its going to be me going to bed rather late and running a few 5-6 hr sleep nights and then just being to exhausted to stay up late. That or I'll start taking some cheap night time cold pills [like the ones you find at walmart] and knocking myself out early. Either way it works - just try and not get too dependent on the cold pills k?

I have kids and therefore, its the reason I stay up to 3-4. I get way more study and other shit done from 10P-4A with no noise.

Unlike AIM, kids had the opposite effect on me. Helps to have a wife who takes care of the morning routine for the kids.

Theres nothing worse than ending up sleeping through the day especially in the summer to break the pattern i have a quick nap for a couple of hours.

Working at night certainly has its advantages though after i have stirred the old pudding i usually go downstairs to get some work done you cant beat it pure peace and quiet.

I work real well late at night but I wish my body would handle it better. I can stay up one full night with no sleep at and all and get lots of shit done. I don't even feel tired.

But - later the following day I always get a serious headache and nausea (sometimes ending in throwing up).

If anyone has a remedy for coping with this I'd love to hear it. :) I wanna stay up some full nights every once in a while and kick ass.

Hehe, she works a full time job - so usually my daily routine is this:

1) Go to sleep at 2-5 AM
2) Wake up between 12 - 3 PM
3) Eat some breakfast (usually cereal)
4) Boot up the laptop and check my profits.
5) Check my email, check my Facebook messages, chat with my partners via MSN/SKype/AIM, check WF, etc
6) Make a few calls if they need calling.
7) Get a shower and get dressed (usually about 5 or so)
8) Do some dishes, take out the garbage, feed the cat, do that random crap.
9) Go to a restaurant or fast food joint for supper with my wife/one of us will make something simple.
10) Do some more bullshit regarding work.
11) She watches some tv while I either do more work or play video games (just got hooked on video games again 2 weeks ago).

Rinse & Repeat.

I notice the same thing - when I don't get much sleep, I don't get a really bad headache, but I get lots of aches and pains and I don't digest my food properly when I'm up too late. I get gassy and no need to go on lol.

I also notice that if I'm tired when I fly, I get the most excruciating pain in my forehead above my eyes and nose - feels liek my head is imploding.

... work work work, gotta by an island :P ...

Little girl huh, same ideas here. I'm not too far away from it, islands off the coast of Florida go for around 1/2 million for the small ones with house included. It's really not that much worse than a normal pimped out house.

of course they can get much more expensive than this .....

To the OP: if you feel your are missing out on live, change your schedule. If not, live it up as there are many advantages to working at night.
