This is definitely something I'm new to - buying a premium domain name....

If i have a domain I wanted to get and am pretty set on it, and both GoDaddy and Sedo lists its price - Is this the min price I have to pay for it (sedo says its a min price to bid)?

Are there any ways I could get it lower than the suggested price?

good point, how do would I go abouts giving an offer, formally writing a personal email? if the past listing price was in the $600 area but has recently been updated to over $1k, would an offer of say $750 but an insult?

No offer is an insult. They don't know you found them on sedo at $500 and raised to $1,000. Why not start at $200. If you don't get response go to $500. Then say you saw them on sedo, etc...

Strategy... use the knowledge you have, and that they don't know you have.. to an advantage.

Actually some people who would be offended if an offer is too low in their opinion.

Don't make an offer, simply send the owner a polite email:

Dear [insert name]

By viewing the registration records of the domain [insert domain] i understand that you are the owner.

If you would be interested in selling this domain please let me know what price you would like to have for it?

If you are not the owner could you please be so kind to forward this email to the owner or individual responsible for making the decision to sell.

Thank you for your time [insert name] and i am looking forward to your reply.

Sincerely,

[your name]
[your email]
[your phone number]
Use your ISP email service.

Don't send it from your business email address or email address that can be used to measure your interest for the domain or cash flow.

Thanks a lot Edwin! the template and the ISP tip will definitely come in handy!

I'm waiting on gathering some funds before I make the offer and will update this thread once it goes through :)

Hope im not hijacking this thread but i believe content is relevant.

For instance would you purchase the .biz, .us, .name TLD for a domain that is relevant or would you always try to buy the premium dot com domain name?

You mean make the inquiry? ;)
Don't make an offer.
