How to create your own WP themes?

Find a good theme > Rip all the WordPress code from it > Design your theme > Insert WordPress code in the proper spot > Profit
The wordpress codex helps a ton when making your own theme or just tweaking one. There's actually a lot of addons that are unnecessary as a function already exists for it.

I do all my own wp themes but I don't start from scratch, I start out with this theme
sandbox.1.6.zip - sandbox-theme - Google Code - Sandbox 1.6 (For WordPress 2.6.x)
It is a very bare bones theme, then I customize it to fit my design. I just change up appropriate files. Not sure how in depth your looking to go but I have had really good success with getting my themes to perfectly match my sites. I also build my custom themes off of it. I know this is not really a tutorial or how to, just a tip that has been working really well for me.
