How To Get Things Done

The Action Machine + Leechblock FTW

checked out the action machine and thought it was a cool program and went to download it and its 47$...

Thats just insane for a program that is basically a timer and a note pad. Anyone know where to get a similar program for free?

I bought a $5 kitchen timer at the store. Simple and the quiet ticking keeps me focused.

I put it on carpet so it is not too annoying.

Starting something that should take 40 minutes? Set to 50 and get at it.

Just started reading Making Ideas Happen:

[ame=http://www.amazon.com/Making-Ideas-Happen-Overcoming-Obstacles/dp/159184312X]Amazon.com: Making Ideas Happen: Overcoming the Obstacles Between Vision and Reality (9781591843122): Scott Belsky: Books: Reviews, Prices & more[/ame]

So far so good, but will reserve my full review until I've read it in its entirety. One of my big problems is my creativity gets in the way and causes me to jump from idea to idea too much, rather than executing like crazy towards a concentrated objective. If you're like that at all, you will probably like this book.

lol I saw that strip linked in the comments (couple good ideas buried there, too). Watterson is awesome - both his humor and art. He's one of the greats.

Yep. I've got a timer, too. I use it constantly.

Simple is best. I start every day with a "to do" list written on a large index card. It's more portable than a legal pad, and the "no frills" style keeps things moving.

When I read your post, I thought of this blog post. Vandelay has a lot of good stuff on being productive. It's geared toward designers, but the ideas are useful for anyone trying to get things done.

Time boxing = turning Parkinson's Law on its head. Very effective strategy.

Parkinson's Law: Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.
