Good article. It sounds like a great idea but like you, I also don't have the time for it.
 
I've never meddled with local search - do standard SEO rules still apply? Looking at the example you provided, it doesn't seem like the guy put any effort into link building.
 
That does look like it would make a lot of money, but at the same time it seems like a huge intial investment. Is the $74 investment in the mailbox just for one city? or for all cities? If you need to pay $74 for evey 50 cities that would come out too $3700 and than another $400-$600 for 50 domains.

Now I know theres other niches you can do this for, but would you still be able to compete with the spammer you listed in the payday loan niche? Does/Would google show 2 listings and map areas in there search results or do they only limit it to one map listing?
 
So you think the SERP is from what? just the jammed packed keworded domain? .....hmm If that is actually true your "business" would definitely have an edge. Cause the real store down the street "Joes Cash store" can't really compete with paydayquickcashadvancemoneyrightthefucknow.com

Well, as long as you make more than $85 per city, it sounds like it's a pretty straightforward plan.

I wonder, though, how many local searches are actually taking place. Not to mention, Google MIGHT consider this gaming, and you could easily be out a few grand investment.

But, no risk, no reward.

I was curious about that to and went to keyword discovery and typed in a few searches people would make like "payday loans new york ny", "cash advance atlanta ga" etc... and the searches volume wasn't very impressing at all, but than again none of these keyword research tools show any searches for google local search.

I would imagine if theres a city with a lot of cash advance stores theres a good market for it in that city and also any people making google local searches are people that probably want to go to the store and check it out, but than again I have no idea how these google local searchers think. I'm sure that cash advance spammer is making a killing.
 
Yeah you're not going to get rich overnight, but if you're smart about it you could make it last a long time and pay forever. You could probably setup some kind of virtual office and answering service. The one way they could find you easy is the ups store addresses. But wouldn't take much more to make a little unique site for each and make deals to secure mail forwarding with a real business. Or lesser known forwarders.
 
Interesting with the phone number too. I assume you have to have a phone number the same way you need a real address, so he just has an 888 voicemail box that basically says sorry we can't take your application over the phone right now but please go to our website at blah blah blah. This guy is sharp.
 
The big problem here is that Google could easily cross reference a database of known POB addresses and you're SOL. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before they start doing this. One thing you could also do is work out a deal with legit businesses to hopefully bring some long term stability to this type of model. Basically you could just call up Joe Blows Payday Loans in Dallas, TX and tell them you will set them up online blah blah blah at no cost, and in return you split the leads with them. Basically something they can understand. They get the postcard and you just tell them to forward it to you. Then basically you just send them a few leads every now and then or something. Hmm.

I just noticed he also has a different 800 on all his sites. Dude must be making thousands a day to set up so much just for one site.

Dude put in a lot of work into this spam project, he's targeting 240+ cities Google
 
Great for him for thinking outside the box. Hopefully he has made or will make a ton before one or more people report him. Big G will shut him down in 2.3 seconds if/when they see what he is doing.

Payday loans are illegal now in GA. It went into law about 2 years ago so that is probably why you wont get anything there. They did a pretty big media blitz to when it became law.
