waxing philosophical here. (maybe had too much :rasta:last night). But...srsly what's the worst that could happen to merika, europe, asia, i.e. the rest of the civilized world IF we (rest of the civilized world) decided NOT to get involved in the middle east anymore. Cut all ties or at least no military or political involvement in the middle east. let the middle east take care of its own mess. let iran or whoever the fuck else in that region do all of the policing of ISIS. let it be their problem, not ours anymore. Any predictions of future outcomes?
If we stop all operations including covert then many of them will get nukes. Israel gets wiped out - for better or worse. Then any infidel country they want gets wiped out. It's not good for fanatics who never went through the Age of Enlightenment and who actually believe in an afterlife to have nukes. We've barely survived nukes with secular countries having them.
I'm not saying I'm for what we're doing over there but I might be for controlling them via strong men, etc - I'd have to think more about it. Some social situations just don't have pretty solutions. Best scenario would be if they went through their own Age of Enlightenment somehow.
the difficult part to prove is whether we've (rest of the world) really been instrumental in doing this, i.e. kept them from getting nukes so far. "Yes, it's all been the results of our due diligence and covert operations (james bond) that they don't have nukes yet". idk...don't have much faith in that statement. My guess?....Any covert intel/operations that actually helped thwart those fanatics from getting nukes has been due to Israeli intelligence (and they're part of the middle east). Not due to our clumsy efforts to find WMDs.
Agreed about them having to go thru their own 'Age of Enlightenment'. But they see the rest of the world as this "outside dark force/enemy of islam/ the non-muslim infidels". We only end up strengthening their religious convictions and fanaticism when we get involved. Pushing them farther away from that enlightenment. Better we stay out of it, let muslims deal with the fanatical muslims their own way. If I'm not mistaken our Age of Enlightment was mostly given momentum from 'internal conflicts' like the French Revolution. No outside enemy to pin it on. It'll mostly be alot worse and take alot longer to reach that point of 'enlightenment' in the middle east. idk, a century or two from now? but maybe there's no other way...

Spies or not, humanitarians are for those victimized by the violence of terrorism. If we stop helping those people, then terrorism would have won. For the goal of terrorism is to strike fear to people so that we would act separately, worrying for our own lives.

Yeah, could do that. I don't know, if I was in Riyadh or somewhere, and found out Mr. Imaginary Man doesn't exist, I think I'd feel inclined to setup a beer festival featuring roasted pig, and a wet t-shirt contest with the women.
I mean, if I spent my whole life following Allah's rules, only to find out he doesn't exist, I think I'd be quite pissed off. I think that would help alleviate some of the tension.
Going through an Age of Enlightenment doesn't make you automatically lose religion. It only encourages you to find things out by using reason and proof rather than authority figures dictating beliefs.
The main founders of the enlightenment period were actually religious and thought that they would reveal the true nature of god by looking at the world scientifically. It eventually backfired. But either way Francis Bacon was a badass (probably related to Kevin) and so were many other religious people who decided reason and analysis was the way to go.
I'm not sure if Islam is compatible with enlightenment though because of Sharia Law actually being required for the religion and other reasons. There are so many things in the Koran that enforce truth by authority and force. Muslims also have the hindsight of knowing that reason has led many people away from religion so their authority figures will push them from it more forcefully.
Well in reality a good muslim is a fanatical muslim. It says many times in the Koran to kill unbelievers etc. And left on their own, fanatic minority will take over just like the minority Nazi fanatics took over Germany. Now I'd be with you and say leave them 100% alone if nukes didn't exist. I might also be with you 100% if we never started fucking with them in the first place (probably about 1953). But now we've pissed off too many people and you can't walk away from that w/out expecting retaliation. We've made blood enemies for a few centuries at least. I'd like to note, after burning that Jordanian pilot alive, there's been TONS of Muslim leaders within the Islamic world coming forth denouncing ISIS, which is exactly what the world needs right now. We need moderate Muslims speaking out against the fanatics, and that's what you see currently happening.
