One last tip, dont over think this. Just do it and market it.

Doesnt matter if you can improve it and make it perfect. If its going to fail, make sure you fail fast and don't waste time. Market it, if it doesnt sell you are doing something wrong.

you would be wrong, because you can embed Javascript, and lots of PDFs can phone home. My utility bill is paid all within a PDF file.

I think you're going the wrong way targeting only regular users for this. You should do two editions. One regular user, and one for corporations and EDU. Corporations can track when people read a memo, teachers could track to see if all of their students opened up a homework or note file..etc

That's freaking awesome dude. PM me. I think this would work quite well on job sites. Personally, if I were you I would run a campaign on Google Adwords content network or high traffic semi-off topic keywords. Bid low, get lots of clicks at like $0.20 to see if you can get some sales. I think a high price point would work with this ($200?). I suggest you split test different prices points. I did not know that was possible and has some very awesome implications

Thank you for all of the suggestions. I will look into tracking PDF documents and other file formats. My brother expressed interest in tracking his excel spreadsheets which is something I looking into as well.
