I Feel Like I Got Raped

Happened to me recently but, not for that much was about a $1k two separate charges. I woke up one morning and got an email alert that my balance had fallen below that amount I had set to be notified at, thought it was odd since I haven't been spending much on that account lately. I logged into my online banking and saw the charges, called the bank immediately, the charges were for "transportation" and done in South Africa and my bank had already sent me a fraud alert that morning but, I didn't notice since I probably overlooked it thinking it was a phishing email.

They took care of it over the phone, cancelled the charges, cancelled my card I had the money credited to my account same day I believe. I didn't have to go into the bank to dispute the charges, didn't have to sign any paperwork or nothing, was done all over the phone right away.

Only thing that was a hassle was because they cancelled the card due to fraud I had to personally go in the bank to get a new card, which wasn't too bad but, then I couldn't login to my online banking and had to go back to the branch (couldn't do it over the phone) and had to get it unlocked only reason that was a hassle was because of how long I was waiting at the bank.

I don't keep more money in my accounts that are linked to debit cards than what I would risk losing. As soon as my balance climbs over a certain amount I immediately start thinking this would suck if somebody charged my account fraudulently for this amount and I move it over to savings accounts that do not have debit cards or checks linked to, so nobody can get access to those funds unless they got access to my online banking and sent a wire. Which my online banking would notify me if somebody adds a wire recipient and would ask for verification codes if somebody logged in from a location I normally don't login from.

So, I would recommend to not keep more than X amount of funds in your charge accounts that you're not willing to lose and keep most of those funds in savings accounts or accounts not linked to debit cards and just transfer funds over when you need to.

I'm with Chase bank and you can even setup your savings account to transfer funds over automatically to your charge account every so often, so again you don't have a large sum of funds in your charge accounts all the time.

Isn't the bank responsible if somebody steals your money as long as you didn't enable them to do it?

No the bank isn't responsible. In the end, the merchant takes it up the ass when someone runs a stolen credit card because the bank says so.

The banks do love to tell consumers that they're responsible, but trust me, they pass that on to the merchant.

Yep, this. The bank just withdraws the money from your business account, and there's fuck all you can do about it.

Not really what I meant. This is on the bank / VISA level, and nothing to do with online stores. UK doesn't have it either yet? I know Canada doesn't. I know Malta, Czech Republic, Thailand, and Malaysia all have it though.

For example, I have my debit card with a VISA number imprinted on it. If I try to order something off say Amazon using that number, the bank will decline the payment. That number will only go through if the card is physically present, and swiped through the terminal.

Then I have another card number, which is available via online banking, but nowhere on the card. That's the number I can use for online purchases. So even if a waiter copies down my card number, unless they have a card printing machine, it's totally useless to them, because that number will never go through unless it's swiped through the terminal.
Yeah, here, it's not a number, it's a phrase that you set (although it's optional), but a ton of stores don't use it, and there's nothing for terminals (slowly bringing in contactless, but that's only for transactions >~£10)

Bros when you eat at restaurants always use this

My old roommate got 8 years for stealing my identity and shit while still living with me.

Years later, across the country, I got mailed a photocopy of one of my credit card statements from the postal fraud inspector or some shit who said it was recovered from a ring of mail theft/identity thieves that were busted and asked me to fill out a form saying they did it without me knowing.

Now I have a locking mailbox. But fuck I didn't realize for a year that my "free checking" was costing $10/mo because I stopped having auto deposits at work.

Some years back I had a $1 charge on my card that wasn't from me. If I remember correctly I went into my bank either the same day or the next day, did a chargeback on that $1, cancelled that card and got a new card number.

I always watch my account like a hawk. That $1 was somebody testing my card, and whoever it was probably would have come back later and banged my card until they emptied my account.

I have no idea how somebody got my card number, but I'm glad I caught it before it became a larger issue as I was using that account to pay my bills out of at the time. Those small charges that weren't 'legit' were warning signs that somebody else had your card number and you would have been wise to act on it sooner.

Sometimes it's good to be paranoid.

well it's understandable the way you behave.
when i get a new ccard i get rid of the magnetic stripe at the back, i clear the cvc code and only use smartcard with a physical pos. if a transaction has to go through the webz then i make sure my install is clean. For all my blackhat/warez needs i use a second pc installed with all my script/warez.

dont use magnetic/contactless cards and avoid sharing pin number of the smartchip.

A couple years ago someone spent a little over $800 at, wait for it, a GAS STATION, on one of my accounts. Wells fargo was cool, refunded the money in about an hour.

A lot of credit card companies as well is atm credit card's have cc protection, where if you go somewhere in a certain mile radius it starts declining your cc unless you call them and tell them you are traveling for a certain period of time before it stops again.

I have that protection.
