Dude I'm jealous. I work for a company that won't fire me no matter how hard I try. All I want to do is collect unemployment to live off of while I concentrate on IM. I've been spending entire days at work doing nothing but reading posts on wickedfire and my bosses are too chickenshit to even say anything to me.

yeah I do that too but it would be sweeter to get paid (from unemployment) to do that from home. Anyway thanks for the idea

Any decent programmer would be in such high demand that they wouldn't care to do business with a client that thinks outsourcing to India is a smart move.

Edit: That's a fairly blanket statement but still would hold true for MOST self-employed coders.

Take it from me - India is not serious competition. I've worked with Indian programmers, they're good for some things, and abysmal at others. A bank programmer shoudl be OK (especially if you program in COBOL, all those programmers are dead and companies with legacy software are chasing after any living ones :-D )
 
I think it's nutty that they are firing you (or laying you off as the case may be), but your last day is a week from now. That's the kind of thing that leaves a company wide open for an ass raping by disgruntled employees.

Other than that, do what others have already recommended. Take them for every cent you are owed and then some (years worked, holidays, back pay, contractual obligations, etc. etc.). Hold out on signing anything as long as possible and make sure you talk to an employment lawyer.

I was pushed out of my last company and saw a lawyer and it was the best decision I could have made. I ended up getting more than double the original offer in the end.

You're a programmer. Make something cool and start making some money on your own.

Start drinking heavily, buy some good pot and stay high as shit for the next week straight. Flip off friends, throw trash at neighbors, and threaten to rape your niece (try not to get a hard on ChrisS).

Then, finally, on the last day you have to go in for work, dress up like superman and walk into the bank and with a gun and blow your own brains out right in the middle of the lobby.

The media around this will strike fear in all people choosing that bank to guard their cash, and no one will go within throwing distance of the place. You will ultimately shut the bank down.

Be a martyr, fight the man.

Sadly, (and I worked at an international bank - one that is still doing OK - as a project manager) it is not.

The high high high ups still think outsourcing is a good idea. They are shoving the "move to India" down everyone's throats, cutting programming and database admin jobs left and right.

And that DESPITE:

- Indian outsourcing companies are mostly SHIT
- Indian programmers are mostly not worth their money - I have seen them mess up the easiest, easiest tasks
- Indian outsourcing companies are constantly ramping up their rates
- Every project manager fears the fucking outsourced projects cause they are crap to begin with, crap to be in, crap in the end
- Any outsourced project will cost as much, if not more than an in-house project because of management overhead - for less value

And don't tell me I don't like the idea of outsourcing or Indians. I got along great with all the Indian programmers, most of them are just not worth their salt.
This also has to do with indian company politics, I will not expand on that now, though.

Still, outsourcing is going strong in every bank!

So - no serious competition, my ass!
Yes, they suck, but you will still loose your job as a programmer.

Start AM or look for a job in anything but a bank.

My dad is a professional bum and has filed for unemployment on multiple occassions and know how the gimmick works. PM me if you need advice (they will deny your claim first time around... keep applying).

You can live off it for a few months while you get your websites earning.

It'll be a shame of Obama wins. Then people like your dad will have CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT to be lazy and get paid....
