It seems that any time I am in line at a retail store (staples, supermarket, card shop) there is some idiot writing a check in front of me. After they write said check they need to provide ID. Then the idiot behind the counter has to write their ID number on the check. Next they need to scan the check to see if its legit and wait for the reciept to print. Sometimes they need to get a manager to authorize the transaction.

My point is, why don't we just lock these people up? Have they never heard of a damn debit card?

Do any of you write checks at retail stores? If so I automatically hate your guts.

People who write checks have generally been doing it since before debit cards were invented.

That, and they like writing down what they paid in their check register so that they don't have to balance their checkbook at a later date.

That being said, I only write checks for rent and bills.

Both of my parents still write checks at the supermarket, but here's the kicker - there is no stupid "ask for ID" or phone number crap. By the time the check's in the hands of the cashier, their ID# and phone # are already on the check. Neither of 'em have debit cards, or credit cards.

There was a consumer law that was going to pass that basically stops the use of checks. Unfortunately a bunch of old people got together and stopped it. Their reasoning was that they like checks because they're "more secure."

I run a retail store so I'll explain what that means. Old people steal. They write checks for a service, if they're in any way unhappy about it or decide later that they shouldn't have to pay for it; They call their banks and cancel the checks. The $10 fee to cancel the check is usually cheaper than what the check was written for. They consider writing a check some sort of service guarantee or return policy (where they don't have to return the product). At the very least they need to make it so you can't cancel checks. ..Fuckin bastards.

I used to work at an electronics store and checks were among the top reasons why I will never work there again. This store did not have a checking system at all so everytime a customer writes a check I have to call the bank to confirm the funds. This almost never worked since 80% of the time I could never get a hold of an actual person to ask. Sometimes the bank will have a service that will let the customer ask for the balance through a pin, but that was rare. I think one time I actually spent 30 mins confriming a single check... not to mention I had to get every freaking info about the guy before I could accept it.

The government would prefer that use used debit cards it makes you easier to track. Just wait to the day the federal reserve fools america into believing that we shouldn't have "cash" anymore and it should be all plastic. They will say there will be no more robberies... No more drugs. No Illegal labor hired. Only way to pass $ is through the card. Will make "taxing" people easier and everyone will be treated equal.

1984 here we are.

what? obviously going 100% debit is the future regardless of it being evil or not.

LOL nice rant. And point well taken. Pain in the arse. I've paid my dues and worked retail in my youthful youth. Checks pissed me off as well.

Lol...old people know all about security don't they? :D

Checks were done away with here in the early 80's - for that exact opposite reason. They were deemed too INsecure. I was actually a bit surprised to see them so widely used in the US when I moved there 12 years ago.

I hated using them, and even more so hated standing behind someone (usually some old fart with polyester pants) in line at the grocery store writing his check for $11.73... Just get a damn card already!

But I doubt that cash will go away. Cash is still necessary for so many things where cards aren't convenient.

This drives me crazy too!!! I live in France and EVERYONE uses cheques, not just the oldies, wtf! It especially annoys me in the supermarket where I should be in and out of there in 5 minutes but instead it takes half an hour.

I never even had a cheque book before moving here. In Australia, on the odd occasion I needed a cheque I would go to the bank and get one, takes 5 minutes. Here I had to make an appointment 2 weeks in advance before I could get them to write the bloody thing for me. I hate this country!!!

Damn..they should just learn how to use credit cards. Makes it even easier to charge something back and no fee.

checks are just as easy to track as a debit transaction. In the end they are both digital transactions.

.

Thats funny because checks are not secure at all, infact they are very dangerous to use. It has their full details and full account info. Hell if someone wrote me a check I can go online and buy all sorts of shit with ach. Any nigerian can clean out their bank account pretty easily.

Old people are stupid

Move to Europe :) I have not once in my life seen anyone pay with a cheque. And my bank charges me €17 to cash them.

Standing in line behind someone who's writing a check is frustrating. But, some of these people harbor a distrust of "technology." The fact that their perception of security is inaccurate won't discourage them from writing checks. Ever. It's too ingrained into their daily (or weekly) routine. And the older we get (I speak from experience), the less willing we are to change our habits and perceptions.

But, yeah... checks. Argh. That and giving exact change. C'mon, if the tab is $14.88, take the hit. Open your hand and accept the $.12. Digging through your purse or pocket in search of the $.88 is just... well, you get the point. :)

Visa FTW.. I only charge my shit on a debit card whenever I'm buying something. I really don't have the patient to write a check.

Can you simply start not accepting checks? A family owned clothing store near where I live does this with the same reasoning as you: they hate checks getting cancelled. They only accept credit and cash.

Also, it seems almost all fast food restaurants do not accept checks.
