I Hate When People Write Checks At Retail Stores!

There is no reason to use debit either. You use a godamned rewards credit card.. Then you pay your fucking credit card bills when you pay your other bills..and guess what? Do you use a check then? Fuck no. You use electronic payments.

I could give a shit about a punk working near minimum wage pissed off about me writing a check in line at a store. First of all if you have ever been a victim of id theft you will realize the value of a paper trail and any moron with common sense will not argue if they have been. Let a debit card into a thiefs fingers and well it can be used as credit in most cases. So seeing both side of debit theft and check theft the old farts win. Even a detective will tell you a check is better in most cases.

The only ones that piss me off is the wait until the total is announced then they dig through their bag looking for the check book or "oh I know I had a penny in here somewhere" at least they could have all details filled out on the check as things are being rung up or change in hand as the total is announced.

Damm ignorant young punks and old farts ....

Dont you guys have a pass with a pin code on it from your bank to pay with? the same card you use for the ATM? we all have that here, just slide your card true a reader enter your pin and your done. Thank god almighty that no one uses checks here in Holland.

People writing checks in supermarkets piss me off. It's usually the lady with a million things in her purse and waits until the last possible minute to whip out the check book.

But what really gets me, are the people who pretend the atm is broken or has made a mistake when in fact they just don't have any money. I'm sure you've seen them, they put their cards in like three or four times and then read the little statement as if the bank has made some grave mistake.

I feel like screaming out "you're broke, get out of the way!"

By the way guys, i agree that credit is far superior to debit. I was just giving them the equivelent of writing a check. I use credit for every single purchase i make (that allows credit). It allows me to easily see all of my spending in one place and offers far better protection then a debit card.

Cheques are insanely easy to forge. When I was 12, my parents got an inkjet printer (they were still REALLY new at the time, printing in colour was almost unheard of as everyone was still on dotmatrix... colour cartridges cost nearly $100). That combined with a scanner and Photoshop 3.1, and I actually managed to forge a cheque that then passed when I used it to go buy myself the LEGO pirate cove & space station (big thinking for a 12yo).

These days, I only use a cheque for something over $1,000. I've set my daily credit usage to that because I REALLY don't trust myself not to go hog wild (I kinda went a little crazy when I got approved for Platinum).

That said, I wouldn't expect a retail store that deals in items less than 4 figures to still take cheques.
They really are an anachronism.

Likewise, it's pretty easy to secure a credit card for offline use in one very simple way.
RUN A MAGNET OVER THE STRIP...
Stupid store clerks will go "huh?", and start looking at it... If you write "Please Ask For Photo ID" on the signature strip, chances are they'll ask for it. That's as secure as it'll get for offline use.

Ferbent: They don't do govt. endorsed cheques like Mail Orders or something in France? I'd nip off to the post office for one when I was waiting on a new cheque book.

shithappens: I don't think it'll happen like that... Electronic payments are inferior for small transactions, due to the time involved and the transaction fee. No merchant will take a $0.10 hit on a $0.30 pack of gum that cost them $0.15 WS.
Also, pre-paid credit cards like VISA are spitting out... you can just pay your immigrant workers in even less easily traced funds.

This drives me crazy too!!! I live in France and EVERYONE uses cheques, not just the oldies, wtf! It especially annoys me in the supermarket where I should be in and out of there in 5 minutes but instead it takes half an hour.

I never even had a cheque book before moving here. In Australia, on the odd occasion I needed a cheque I would go to the bank and get one, takes 5 minutes. Here I had to make an appointment 2 weeks in advance before I could get them to write the bloody thing for me. I hate this country!!!

I've been to France on holidays several times..in fact I've seen most of Europe, and never in my life did i see a cheque payment at a supermarket.

We use a debit card for everything retail. My parents refuse to get one because they have heard so many horror stories. No matter the fact that I tell them I use one all the time and have never had a problem in 10 years. They also are always scared of getting a computer virus all the time, they are about as paranoid as two people can be. Oh well, different generations I suppose. I can imagine when my kids get my age they will be bitching at me because I haven't had the chip implanted in my hand yet that I wave in front of the scanner that pays for everything instantly. HeeHee

The real reason why people like checks is this: My broke trailer trash parents would always go in a day or two before payday to buy groceries and get cash back because of the bank float time. With a debit card, that's impossible. The float time is an interest free loan that's just begging to be taken.
