It really doesn't matter if it is a chick song the guy is singing. The point is - he went viral and impressed the audience. I don't think it is by chance that he is singing that song. If you noticed, all the audience are girls. Perhaps they picked the song he had to play.
 
A school talent show isn't going to have the greatest sound equipment. Also consider the fact that this was probably recorded using a cheap consumer grade camera, and he still sounds really good. He's got it. I feel sorry for the kid who went after him, what a letdown that must have been.
