I heard about affiliate marketing and this website from a friend, so I decided to check it out, and I'm interested in getting started. One obstacle, is that I have little to no clue when it comes to building websites. So, I come to you guys asking for resources that will teach me what I need to know. What books, if any, should I buy? What websites will teach me how to build websites? Etc.

WordPress the CMS will be your best friend. They call it a blogging soft ware but you can do a ton of stuff with it. Learn Seo first if you are going to work with organic traffic sources. But I think most important thing is learn how to do keyword research

You can google most of the questions you will have in the beginning

Google rocks! Check it out.

Initially, read everything. There is so much to learn, you could start just about anywhere and start making progress. Printed books are quickly outdated, but if you learn something, it's not time wasted.

Online tutorials are available so that you can find out guidance to build websites. Very nice information is given out in the web. So find out the best website which can help you build good information.

So, from my initial research, it sounds like I'll need to understand HTML, CSS, PHP or javascript, and SQL to develop websites. Does that sound right? Am I missing anything?

Not really. Providing you're going down the PHP route. There are other routes such as the RoR, Python (Django etc), ASP. But PHP is always a good starting point.

I've never done an PHP yet. But, I have done some Python, so maybe I'll check out Django.

Even down the Django route, you're going to need a good understanding of HTML and CSS, along with Javascript if you're wanting Javascript.

Although, to be perfectly honest, I've been web-deving for a few years now, and I still totally suck as JS. Unless you're making the next big web app, you can probably manage just using prebuilt lightboxes and other common features.

Honestly, I've done fine just knowing html (yes, I even work with tables instead of CSS but CSS is on my todo list), knowing how to use Photoshop (I'm really and creative design comes naturally), and tools like Dreamweaver and other WYSIWYG editors help a lot. Wordpress isn't that difficult, and I've also learned how to use Joomla.

Definitely want to learn PHP and CSS, but again, they're not necessary. Learning photoshop and basic design skills is pretty handy, though.
