I own the .LY, but not the .COM - thoughts?

Hey guys, any advise appreciated.

I have a domain in which I want to put a web app/tool. I own the cool version of the domain (lets say its a .ly, and it creates the apps name i.e App.ly (not it, just example)). but another company owns apply.com.

Their old site said (if you came here from a WHOIS, we're not selling any domains). Bastards. i know.

So, i'm stuck between using the .LY version that I like, with the applyPRO.com domain I currently have. but that leaves the original .com unavailable and owned by someone else - who can monitize it down the road off my product.

Or should i try to find another domain? Thoughts on pushing forward with a product/service that another company owns the domain? Legalities not worth it?

90% going with new domain, just wanted some input.

thanks

IMO domain hacks and web 2.0 spellings always leak traffic to the .com

Cases in point flickr and delicious who both had to stummp for the .com

If it is SAAS / web app, I see a lot of these going with domain hacks, .co's etc. If you are ever successful I believe you will regret not finding a suitable .com and paying a premium for something brandable. Just my 2c

haha, much appreciated feedback. Yeah i agree that traffic will trickle down into the .com', and the trust factor behind .com is more than any cute .ly. Last thing i wan to do is end up paying XXXXX for a domain i should of changed before launch.

I'll have to change my domain up a little bit, much appreciated fellas.

It won't make too much difference depending on what kind of users your target demographic is. I'd stick to the .ly and not worry too much about it.

I would try to get the .com when you prove the product works. Don't waste $$ now.

.com is more respectable and those exotic like .ly make me concerned about viruses on those spammy scammy websites :)
