He studied the roots of combat. He is a pioneer in "MMA" if you take the term literally. He took the best out of fighting "styles" and combined to his own way of fighting. He mixed martial arts.
He defeated a 3 time boxing champion in high-school. He was a wild street fighter. He broke his opponents arm in a gang-related street fight. Bruce was a smart, methodical fighter with unreal physical strength for his size. Whatever fighting sport you train him in, he would excel. With his speed and quickness he would easily perform flying armbars etc...
Also Bruce's idea of interpreting fist is admired by many. Your opponent is most vulnerable while attacking. Obvious but overlooked.

Bruce Lee pioneered the idea of taking what the world had to offer and to make a extremely effective fighting style out of it. Remember, during the 60s and early 70s, most karate & kung-fu matches would throw you out of the league if you even touched your opponent. Today, MMA fighters would laugh at you if you wanted to 'fight' but not touch anyone and just 'simulate' hits.
Bruce knew what he was doing and was the best, it took 20 years for the rest of the world to catch up to him and what he already knew. Who's to say that today he would be any worse than Royce Gracie or another MMA legend?
