I’m making some changes!

A friend told me he heard that fear and excitement are the same emotion…to know the difference you have to check your shorts! My shorts are clean so I guess I have to say I am just excited!!!

It seems like I haven’t gotten very far since I joined Wickedfire in 2006. In fact from Sunday to Monday out of 34 hours I was on the clock at one of my wage earning jobs 32 of those hours (probably sounds familiar to those who remember me). Even before this past weekend, I knew it was time for change and I got started.

WHAT I DO

I have been doing the same thing for years…working a couple wage earning jobs, writing for my own writing business, and working on my Internet projects. I am blessed with plenty of work in a time when unemployment is high. I have the option of full time work at Walmart, I could have had full time hours at the group home, I have more writing jobs than I can keep up with, and I overflow with ideas for my own Internet projects….I am truly blessed, but haven’t used my blessings efficiently and I have not been effective.

TURNING POINT

Recently I prayed about what to do because what I have been doing has not been working and I am really getting tired. It is not the first time I prayed about this, but what I did different this time was…after praying I did some things that are really hard for me…I was still, I was quiet, and I listened. This resulted in some big changes.

WHAT HASN’T BEEN WORKING

Working so much and still struggling financially isn’t really working out and hasn’t been working out for me. Having so many writing jobs that I can’t keep up or that I don’t deliver on time, has been frustrating. I constantly work and rarely have time for a social life and I don't have enough time for family and friends. I am still single. Nothing I have done the past several years to try to remedy this worked.

EVALUATING AND MAKING CHOICES

First off…family and friends stay. Next I had to think about income. Well, I love to write and I can do it from home…this works for a single mom. Walmart has good pay, regular opportunities for raises, good hours, and in two years I’m vested. My Internet projects have potential, but need some attention. The group home gives me personal satisfaction and I’m in my comfort zone (been there 11 years and in the field for 13 years) but doesn’t pay as well with lots of cutbacks.

I knew the group home had to be cut. I was hoping for a sign that this was the path that I should take, but it didn’t happen. Still I felt the urge to stop doing the group home job. I took a step of faith and gave notice to my supervisor at the group home. It was after that step of faith that there was a sign that I did the right thing…. I got several article orders! If need to I can add hours at Walmart to match the lost income, but the plan is to focus on writing.

MAKING CHANGES

It is a big decision and a little scary, but I’m glad I realize that IF IT ISN’T WORKING…STOP DOING IT. So on the 15th I will have my last day working in group homes and working with the disabled and mentally ill. I’ve been feeling a little scared, but also very excited.

I am going to start creating a schedule for writing, focus on organizing, and commit to its success. When I have a day off, the day be not be open to other plans with me trying to fit in writing. Now I will block off time for writing and fit everything else in around it. There will be other changes as well with how I work at my business. While making writing a priority, I will still enjoy the flexibility and conveniences of working from home for myself, but no longer will I walk the line between business success and failure.

YOUR TURN

Don’t follow in my footsteps, look at what is and is not working and make some changes today. Get started right away having the best, most productive, fulfilling life on and off line that you can.

most courageous poster of the year award goes to jan for talking about her walmart job in sts

srsly though, its important to spend some time like this every week reflecting on where you're going. sometimes life needs a route adjustment.

Congrats on taking action! Pushing the limits of your comfort zone is always tough but necessary if you want to grow.

After reading your post, I'm thinking... have you ever considered writing and selling ebooks on various subjects? Since you love writing so much, you can essentially work once to create an asset and then have it make money for you over and over again (instead of just selling your time writing for others).

Most people in this forum bash ebooks but you can make ridiculous money with them - especially if you love creating content.

lol re: courageous post

I haven't thought much about ebooks.....think I'll look into it! I can see how weekly evaluating can be good....it prevents years passing by without effective change.

ebooks is generally a bad idea.. because people can share your shit.

desktop software is also a bad idea because people can crack your shit..

SaaS is the best business model IMHO.

can you fucking read? she works at goddamn walmart you think she knows how to setup a SaaS business model? what somebody suggested maybe writing an ebook could be her only chance, considering writing is her (part-time) profession/passion. obviously she sucks at marketing or else wouldn't be at walmart, maybe she can try to partner with somebody and write the e-book free and the partner could do the marketing for revshare (if it's somebody she can trust, get contracts written and all that).

the ebooks people hate here are make monies online and wafo shit, i suppose there's some niche out there or other shit she could write useful content that isn't bullshit. yeah people steal shit but, it depends on the industry obviously if it's more tech related you have smarter people out there but, there are industries out there where the demos can be old people or just people don't know how to rip, torrent etc.

Surprisingly, sharing/torrents won't make a big difference to your bottom line. The only people who get your stuff on torrents were not your customers to begin with and the people who immediately ask for refunds anyway.

Trust me, it's really not an issue.

As for SaaS being the best business model? Couldn't agree more. But as
MentalyDisturbd mentioned, going from a freelance article writer to a SaaS business owner in one leap probably isn't happening (not that it can't, mind you).

Jan: since all the rage is LSI content... learn how to do that ASAP and your orders will certainly increase.

Her problem isn't lack of work, it's lack of time. She needs to build an asset rather than sell her time.

True.

Just saying that in order for her to never have to pick up more hours at walmart because her income is reduced due to quitting her other job she can include LSI content in her article writing giving her a short term boost in business as it is the article content that is currently in demand.

I'll be sure to call up Sean Combs and Jay Z and let them know that there is no longer any money in music because people can share their shit.

But Jan you say this every year :(

Baby steps, I guess. And you got a full time job, it's tiring I know.

even if it is bullshit, who cares? ebooks in "make monies online" make money, or there wouldn't be so damn many of them.

and don't be so damn judgmental, holy shit. working at walmart doesn't make you an idiot. people fall on hard times, it's not like she's collecting welfare. Know who else worked at Walmart for $6/hr? their current international CEO, who is worth millions now. Walmart hires internally for executive positions

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.
