A human looks at it, is appalled, feelings of empathy and altruism rise to the fore, and donations are sent - we're sharing our resources. Nobody is advocating a "don't share" philosophy. Libertarians here are more than happy to exchange information and resources. Its funny watching people in the US argue about socialised medicine. Take it from someone that has lived in a country with a fully socialised medicine system called medicare (Australia)...it doesn't work.

Accepting income taxes of 48.5%, due largely in part to the medicare system, is a tough enough salt to take but then you rub in the fact that now...because I work for a living...I have to pay generally $50 just to see a doctor, forget about major surgery...I dont see the value.

It just simply acts as a disincentive for people to go out and generate economic activity and to look after themselves. I remember talking to an old guy pumping his pension down the guts of the poker machine and when I asked him what about the future...he told me not to worry...he has the gubmint to pick up his health costs. Newsflash...its not the gubmint that pays....its me!

Forget about the economic case for government not regulating and distorting the market for health care and just solely focus on the lesson it teaches us about work. Work and you get penalised and have to pay for others health care. Don't work and get free health care. What has the bigger incentive?

But... That's happening already. The vast bulk of the aid given to the Philippines will be from other governments, who will have collected it via tax, and yes, enforced that tax collection.

Here's another scenario. Most people on here make their money by scraping other people's material - in other words they are helping themselves to stuff for free - call it forced sharing since the owner of the material didn't give you permission. Now look at the other side of the coin. Some poor writer out there is spending hours writing but they don't make any money from the stuff because it gets stolen immediately. Then they get sick and can't pay for care because they've not made any money. So the govt takes some money from you to pay for them. And it all evens out!

It makes me laugh when all the people on here are so sure that they need no-one, when their entire set-up is based on other people sharing stuff with them - the world wide web protocol, the material you all scrape for free, the ideas others share, the free web 2.0s you build your links on and so on. If you had to do it all from scratch without the "sharing" you'd be stuffed. You like being beneficiaries but not contributors.
