if you want to be ripped off and absolutely held at ransom with your sites and their ability to make money... go see ix webhosting... they are brilliant at screwing people around and not backing up vps's... thats right... get a vps but you will not get a backup as they do not back up a thing...

so in short.... here is a simple formula....

shit hosting = ix webhosting...

ZenSix doesn't backup your data either... but thats kind of expected for 'unmanaged' plans (besides under 30$ for a 768MB ram VPS isn't too shabby if you know what you're doing). My personal VPS is with them.

I don't see anything on IX's page about the VPS's being "Fully Managed" (like my client hosting VPS on knownhost.com), nor do I see anything in their text about backups.

Normally unless explicitly stated, you should be responsible for your own data, they take care of the hardware and 'core' software. If its a cpanel based hosting, backing up your own stuff is very easy. Course even on an umanaged VPS it doesn't take much just to get into the routine of safegaurding your data.

Oh well, you live and learn.

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

dumbshit... really, do some google searches (esp search on webhostingtalk.com) for real reviews. If you want a VPS that won't ever let you down, has one of the most insanely supportive user group communities (and one of the largest active channels on freenode) just go get an account at linode.com. They've been around forever, take better care of their servers than anyone in the business, have a back-end that's custom + lets you do things most other backends don't (i.e. reverse dns setups + it even has an API you can use to automate shit, not to mention one click insta-upgrades + downgrades).

Also, if you want a fail-safe backed up VPS that has someone checking in on the security + iptables settings, etc.. then you're gonna ahve to fork over the $ to get a managed service because you clearly aren't capable of taking care of your own shit. Read up my friend, and ask around (as to how to harden as well as optimize your setup ) and you'll reap the rewards 10x fold when all you have to do is clone the vps image to kickstart a fresh install.

Regardless - Always back up your own shit. Amazon's EC2's service will cost you pennies a month just to do a nightly backup that you can automate with any of the million free + easily found scripts out there. Here's one of them in fact:
Laszlo Molnar - Tech-Biz-Life-Me - Backup to Amazon S3 using Duplicity | Tips and Tutorials | Open Source

then here's the one i use, though it's ruby:

yea however they offer a managed solution which you can pay for but yet again in the same vain they do not actually do any backups... i have boxes I look after but this one is a clients vps and they need to get some stuff resolved so they can get their site rendering...

Oh by the way I bolded the key thing on their VPS page:

If having your own operating system, control panel, full root access, guaranteed uptime, and system resources matters, then VPS is what you're looking for. VPS gives you control of your self-managed server, just as if you had your own dedicated server.

self-managed... well duh they don't touch your shit. Course I'd go with ZenSix (if they weren't sold out right now) since they charge half the price as IX for a self-managed/unmanaged VPS.

... you're managing a client's VPS and you're not doing this stuff yourself already?

not self managed... they offer a managed solution... where they maintain it etc...

Can you link me to where they say they do managed VPS, and what services are covered?

I'm looking their terms of service.

Seems that if they do make backups, its only for their own internal purposes only.

It doesn't matter how many ways you explain to someone the importance of keeping their own backups; the only people who take initiative to ensure their data is backed up are the people who have lost their shit sometime in the past.

Ain't that the truth.

I spend about 9 extra dollars each month to have backups... nightly going back 14 days, then weekly backups (ya really only get charged for the bw so hosting old shit on amazon is great)... thats only because of all the video sites... before it was 2-3 extra bucks a month.. all automated.. all lifesavers numerous times..look into it.. trust me
