Well with the decrease in income at the Magazine Telemarketing workplace, it's time for me to seek other employment. I figured that if I am to work for another person, then I might as well work in a field that I'm interested in. (Lord knows I'm tired of staring a clock every 5 minutes)

I decided to search indeed.com with the search term SEO or Internet Marketing and came up with results as these these

My question to you all is what do you think I should do to make myself a competitor for one of these jobs. I have no prior experience with another company not to mention I haven't even gotten too far into my own AM endeavors. I have no degree either.

Maybe applying to one of these jobs will be a complete FAIL but it's worth a shot. But before I take that shot I want to make sure that I've got the right guns and ammo.

How would you all approach this. What types of skills do you think I should have or lie and say I have? Like Html, A+ etc...(I don't know).

And can anyone point me to a good resource to help with resumes as well.

A majority of you on here are intelligent and down to earth, so I figured that I come in here and bounce my ideas off of you and ask for a little guidance.

Thanks

You really can't lie about core skills like knowing HTML --if that's what you mean... how long would that BS fly?

If you still have your job or are ok financially for a bit then you can "take a position" (read not be desperate).

Remember the ONLY purpose of your resume and cover letter is to get you the interview-- research the company a bit so you have an idea of their prefered MO-- is it real corporate, slighlty relaxed, etc. Also the more you know about them the more you can target your shit to hit 'em between the eyes.

If you do lie about where you worked, etc. a lot of places will fire you if they find out; even if you're really good... some won't though.

hope this helps.

Thanks Gerard. I won't lie but I was more so just wanting some ideas on good credentials that one should have.

Fuck cradentials, do what I do. I walk in and challenge their top knowledge guy and put him to shame. The offer is soon to follow.

However, if you don't know a lot about the subject, don't do this. You'll look like an ass. I look like an ass anyway. It's my lifestyle.

I've got a question...........

What can you do?

Do you know html?

Do you know enough to embed links?

Do you know enough to do on page seo?

Do you know what on page seo is?

Could you edit a sites css sheet to change it's look?

If you know those things you are probably ahead of half the folks working for seo companies :) If you don't -- well you need to learn.

I'm regularly hired by seo firms to fix what their employees screw up or don't know how to do. It's amazing how many seo folks are just flashy salesmen with a lot of buzz words. If you can really do the work though there are plenty of companies hiring.... your problem is it's usually word of mouth for the good jobs.

You could always say ur a member here then dickroll 'em if they give u any shit...

... tell 'em ur an seo god and have them google make monies online...

But seriously, I have a feeling you already know the answer-- if you think you need more bullets then read up on your choosen vocation. If you fit the demographics of most of the users here, your stlll relativley young.

Personally I have hired people that were really fucking earnest even though they were not the most qualified on paper... that shit counts and comes through on an interview... most people are pretty attuned to that; you know sincerity and desire I mean...that shit counts a lot in some companies.

Good luck.

Great advice, you just have to be good of course.

With tech work, being able to speak coherently about how you will benefit their project or product is about all you need. If you have a slick resume but sound hurr durr on real knowledge, you may get hired, but it will be with a very frustrating group to work amongst.

What GerardWon said is also important; if your skills are intermediate it is much more comfortable to be seen as the energetic new guy than have people continuously expecting things from you that you can't handle right away.

HELL YEAH, call them to a real nigga roll call then show him up and beat his ass like in DRUMLINE

Thanks. Well I am more so looking for an entry level position. Yeah, I really don't want to be put into a situation that I can't handle.

I've never put together a resume, can anyone point to any resources online that can help me out.

I know of these things but have little experience about them. But I will study them enough to atleast be able to explain how they work.

Any other ideas?

Working at an SEO firm sucks dude, I've been doing that for the past two years. DON'T do it. I would take a job at McDonalds before that and just work on building something of my own.

It's grunt work, you end up doing very valuable work for like $12-14 an hour and it's poorly structured, poor benefits. It's so exploitative because SEO is a lot harder to sell than to get it done, so if you know SEO you get raped by these firms because you know nothing about marketing(me). It's all marketing with SEO, selling it to ignorant consumers. Look at the 'hard core SEO' for the #1 page on Clear Lake County Real Estate. 6 hours maybe? It's a PR 1, looks like shit, doesn't matter, someone sold it and got good money for that. But they'll pay you shit to do it.

Don't work at an SEO firm dude. It sucks.

im going to apply to be a structural engineer. Skills? I'll just lie and say I know what I'm doing. Oh what? 100 people died when my bridge broke. Shitty.
