I remember making thousands per day about 2 years ago when Google (and YPN) allowed images to be placed next to their ads in a deceiving way.

Since disallowing that, my CTR (on media sites) has been terrible.

Does anyone have any tips?

I keep reading about the conventional methods of doing this such as
1) blending in text link colors to make it look like part of your site - works the best so far, but my CTR per ad unit still hovers around a poor .50%
2) place ads in most viewed part of your site - doing this already, still poor CTR.. perhaps the ads are too obvious?
3) place a 728x90 banner at the absolute top of your page - i read about this method in an ebook that i was scammed into buying... didn't really work well at all
4) place an ad at the very bottom of your site - i guess the idea here is so that when your users reach the end of your page and have nowhere else do go, they click on your ad. again, i didn't have much success
5) use the ad with the highest CTR.. the big 338x300 (or whatever) rectangle - takes up a lot of space and really doesn't do much better than the other ad methods

anyone else have any tips? i'm running out of ways to experiment

Make the ad unit border color the same as the background. You could also try using link units below text.

I have had success with campaigns using pages designed for Adsense CTR.

All the techniques you mentioned work to a degree - you just need to tweak and refine.

Im building custom LPs for people - I have had success in the past with LPs for CB products and also straight adsense. CTR for a project Im working on for SEO Mike is hovering between 10-30%.

Put an adsense block right underneath your header and directly above your content. Make the border colors the same as background color (if you have a blue/red/any color border on top of white, people tend to instantly see it as a "separate" part of the page and filter it out. At least, that's what I've read and it does make sense).

Also, have the link titles colored the same as other internal links on your site. ie your links are blue, so should your adsense links. The only time I would break this rule is if your normal links are black and so is your text. In that case I would make the adsense links red or blue to stand out a bit more.
