I have yet to be kicked off and push a veritable shit ton of traffic through them
Silly Question, would I be able to use a windows VPS like the above to act as my "PC when needed"? I am all mac based but want to start using some of the software that is only PC based. Is there a way to virtual box in from a mac?
yes, it's how a lot of guys get their va's to use software without having to buy the va's the licenses and deal with install issues and everything.
Look up mac to windows remote desktop
Under Remote Desktop on the server, check the Host Configuration settings. There are 4 settings you need to pay attention to:
End a disconnected session: Set to 'Never' so ti will maintain disco'd sessions.
Active Session Limit: Max time you can be logged in before it disco's. I think you set this to 0 for unlimited, but Google it to be sure.
Idle Session Limit: Time you're allowed to idle on the RDP. Should act similarly to Active
When Session Limit is Reached or Conn. Broken: Make sure it's not set to 'End' the user's session. This will keep programs running even if the user disco's.
Maybe you already checked that stuff, but just to be sure.
Just a quick bump on this. I was interested in trying this out to see if there was a benefit to running my software on a VPS. The exact same thing happened with my VPS provision at Forex: they did not start terminal services automatically.
If you end up trying this out, just reply to the email where they tell you you're all set and ask them to make sure Terminal Services is activated. Maybe they'll get the hint and add it to their provisioning script or whatever.
I ended up saying fuck it and moving SB back to my desktop. I couldn't stop the time outs, and it was actually running shittier than before. I bought some private proxies and adjusted some of the settings and it's performing really well now. That VPS is cheap, so I'll put that to a different use.
