Interesting documentaries to watch?

Will definitely check that out. For any fans of sports docs, drug docs, the 30 for 30 series, or pretty much anyone, ESPN 30 for 30: The Two Escobars is a phenomenal one. Arguably the best documentary I've seen

The 30 for 30 sports docs are excellent. I can highly recommend the one with the Detroit Bad Boys team (NBA if you are not aware).

One of the most polarizing teams ever and a good example of turning your haters into motivation.

I saw that one a few months, and while it's not quite as profound as some of the others, it was still a good watch, if for no other reason than how awesome Bill Laimbeer is.

The great Bill Laimbeer. White upper class bro became the though guy of a team full of inner city black guys. I always laugh when Isiah calls him a 'thuuugh'.

Too bad about Laimbeer, he has been a very successful coach in the WNBA (yeah I know), but the NBA won't touch him because Mike didn't like him, same as with Isiah who is easily a top 3 pg ever, but didn't make the Dream Team because of Mike.

Don't get me wrong, I am a huge MJ fan but that was some weak stuff.

Just watched Touching the Void and have to say it was a fantastic documentary.

The true story of two climbers and their perilous journey up the west face of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes in 1985

It's pretty grim, but I recommend checking out High on Crack Street. The documentary captures the lives of several drug addicts and their ups and downs. If I remember, the movie The Fighter is based on the brother of the former boxer in this movie.

Depressing, but give it a shot.

Great link thanks

The DARE program in school was a joke, they need to make highschool kids watch this kind of shit instead.

I've seen some of this, not sure what to think about it yet. It's not as much about Nirvana as it is Kurt's life. The animation part is kinda creepy, because it does bring him back to life. So far, the performance videos have all been seen before, even the early stuff before they had a band name.

Just about everything else is new. Kurt used to make a lot of recordings of himself telling stories, some of that is new stuff. Also would do stream of consciousness onto notebooks. The filmmaker had unprecedented access to that via his family.

This film gives you a real good idea where the music came from.

Aww fukk, watched the 2nd half, there are a number of Courtney's home videos where they are doing dumb but sorta funny stuff, watching it will make you want to take a bath afterwards, and she shows boobs a couple times. The videos with their daughter were good, except for the last couple, which were sad and scary.

The way the film was cut strongly implied that Kurt killed himself because he thought Courtney was cheating on him. Courtney admits doing heroin for a couple weeks into her pregnancy, but quit until some time after when Kurt had a relapse. She didn't have control over the final cut of the film, though their daughter is an executive producer.

A friend (possibly the person who shot some of the home videos) was not happy at all with the film, and believes the director exploited the family:

I am writing to explain my point of view about the film Montage of Heck. When I was originally contacted about this movie years ago I thought it sounded like a good idea, it was pitched as the Kurt movie where he got to tell his story in his own words and it was suggested that it would minimized the clichés about his life. Over the last 3 years I have gone out of my way to assist and support the people making Montage of Heck. They have had more access and resources than anyone else making a film on this subject and yet the final product is in my opinion both confusing and disappointing.

I would like to dispel the unfortunate mythos surrounding Kurt’s heroin use and subsequent death. I am very sad when I meet young fans who idolize Kurt and think that shooting junk and self destruction are necessary parts of the creative process. He had many productive happy years making art and music before fame; Courtney and heroin came into his life (they came in that order).

The film failed to show that while he was living in Olympia he was surrounded by a large group of creative people who supported each other’s art and challenged the status quo in revolutionary ways. He was just one of many very talented, brilliant people that were part of that scene.

After he became famous he often complained about feeling singled out and made efforts to bring other people from that group in to the spotlight with him. Kurt was inclusive and believed in supporting the underdog. He often talked about politics and felt it was part of his job to support equal rights for women and gays.

Sadly this movie continues to uphold the old myths about Kurt’s life that were in my opinion originally invented to help make Courtney appear more sympathetic after the Vanity Fair article revealed that she was shooting heroin while pregnant. I believe this movie is from Courtney’s point of view and is not very reflective of the person I remember Kurt to be. The director doesn’t appear to identify with Kurt’s position at all but instead just repeats tired clichés about Kurt’s life. An example of one of the most malicious myths the film features is the idea that he was destined to commit suicide because of his childhood scars. The director included many cringe-worthy moments that would have been humiliating for Kurt who was a sensitive person with a history of being ostracized and bullied. The film Montage of Heck feels voyeuristic, exploitive and devoid of empathy.

The footage/commentary ends after his attempted suicide in Italy and goes to black screen with text about when he died. There is a previously unreleased song during the credits, and maybe some pieces of other stuff they were working on near the end.
