Internet Will Become “Paid System” Within “Five Years”

Yet another guy with so much money he doesn't actually have to spend it to get stuff worrying that he might actually have to start paying for shit... It's like when celebs get busted for shop lifting, and then say they weren't aware they couldn't take it because every other shop gives them shit for free.

I'd ask how the fuck these people end up controlling such vat commercial empires, but I know it's because they're just figure heads and have actually hired some real egg heads to do the work anonymously for $50k a year.

IMO there are too many hippies on the internet and too few business people.

Take us for instance as a industry , we can turn a profit with amazingly low traffic by learning trends, what converts and then sell it.

These large sites really don't have a clue with how to monetize their sites at all.

Defiantly possible, look at something like Facebook, millions of users and they don't turn a profit.

Look at YouTube, doesn't turn a profit.

I doubt something like twitter turns a profit.

Somethings got to give.
I would pay for a facebook account, I still think there should be free accounts, but I would pay for a permium facebook account to secure it and back up my photos type deal, I save everything on there I would cry if I lost it.

then you have sites like craigslist who can make a shitload of money but don't make that much.

Well after reading his dribble, all I heard was him letting everyone know ahead of time that "HIS" sites are most likely going to do away with free services that they offer in the next 3 to 5 years.

Everyone knows that the Internet is already monetized, though certainly not to the extent that it could/can be.

Now there is something that has been discussed before that could be the next step in the Internet that could be monetized VERY WELL. That's competition for the existing Internet in the form of a Private Internet outside the prying eyes of government.

We just need to make a few more advances in data transfer systems and storage to have the foundation set for this to work. Couple that with encryption that incorporates next generation A.I and we'd almost be there. The final step would be for someone in the private sector to come up with a faster more efficient wireless system to connect it all together without the need for hard data lines.

The creator of Johnny Mnemonic was very close to the right idea for protecting data.

I remember reading an article back in the late 1980's, can't recall who wrote it or which magazine, about a box the size of a set-top cable box that could store 200GB of data in a system of laser beams. No hard storage back-up, just in the Light. They were all excited about it and saying that they could download a 90 minute movie in under 30 seconds. (Pretty impressive for back then.) Then the user could watch it at their leisure. At no time did they EVER address the issue of a power outage and the loss of data since there was not any type of hard backup.

This same technology could be put to extremely good use in a private internet system. Combine that with the synthetic crystal storage systems being developed and you can see the possibilities. Synthetic Single Crystal Diamond used to make High NA Lenses (SIL) for optical data storage, Solid-Immersion Lenses This a report of what is almost ready to go out for public consumption. As they perfect synthetic crystal growth methods I'm pretty sure we will see things similar to the crystals in the Superman Movies but smaller.

Mr. Diller is obviously looking at the wrong Internet for the future of REAL Internet Monies.

Sincerely,

MT

its certainly possible. however, i dont know if everything will be paid. content providers that have value will actually have to bring value to the table other than being just the local newspaper that everyone has to get because its the only game in town. because of the internet people have options and businesses are forced to find their value proposition. the keys to the kingdom of syndication have been scattered. no longer do large media companies own the sole means of distributing information/content.

it'll be a rough transition into what barry diller calls the paid system. im not fully convinced that it will be that way. barry is obviously optimistic that it will be because he controls several content providers.

Awesome about the laser thing and your insight but you loose points for not knowing William Gibson by name. Seriously anyone who is on the internet and especially anyone who makes their living from it should have a little William Gibson altar on their workdesk.

Babies in China are crying because you don't know who William Gibson is.

OK, I get 1 point back, but you lose one for NOT giving his FULL name.

William Ford Gibson.

Hell, it took me like 30 seconds to recall the name of the DAMN movie to begin with. LOL!!!

Your post made me have to go Wiki his ass!!

Sincerely,

MT

Except that no one uses his middle name... and it's not printed on any of his books, because he's not L Ron Hubbard.

Go read Neuromancer btw... fucking ace book.

While checking into him I saw this William Gibson - Official Website.

I saw that Neuromancer was there and figured that it would be a good read. Now that you've recommended it, I will pick it up. Thanks!!

Sincerely,

MT

The brilliance of WG is that with every one of his novels and short stories, he has gotten it. He's never really made a bad call in one of his books.

It goes without saying Neuromancer is great, if you are hardcore about Scifi, Burning Chrome is awesome, I really like Pattern Recognition from his more recent books.
