So I'm old now and I try to be frugal. I refused to buy an IPAD for like, a long time.

I bought one eventually..

Anyways, the IPAD for once, was a technology thing that I didnt regret buying.

But WTF, I have 5 iphones total (4 of the old models). Then finally
the IPHONE 4 which is good, but I bought 4 of them to get there.

Do you feel like an idiot buying the NEW ipad, with your old one still around? I guess if I sold my old ipad for a good price I wouldnt feel as bad.

apple has that scam does to a science

I rent my tech stuff. Buy it new - use it for a year - sell it on ebay - repeat process.

Let me give you an example I have a Dell studio 15 laptop - purchased it for £500 last year. I will probably get around £460 for it on ebay. After fees I've pretty much lost £50.

So i've rented the laptop for one year for £50 and my initial £500 has been tied up not earning me interest of say 2% in a bank account. So total rental fo 12 months is £60.

What this equates to is that £60 fee I pay every year gets me the latest model of Dell laptop covered under warranty so if I ever have a problem it's covered. The asset that I own also keps its value better. If the time comes I do not need a laptop I can sell it for a small loss and put the remaining ££ to work elsewhere.

That's what I do with my cars. I sell them every 2-3 years.
ONtopic: I don't own an iPad and I won't be getting one anytime soon. The only Apple product in my posession is an iPod nano 4th Gen that I only use when I board on a plane.

I'm sure a lot have seen this but for those that haven't....

I didnt buy one for a long time, but my wife wanted one so I bought one 3 months ago and now they come out with the ipad 2.

I also have a macbook pro that I bought 1.5 years ago, and now the new models are out.

Ive had my iphone 3gs for about 1.5 years and they got the iphone 4 out now too.

I dont mind. Im the guy that still uses XP even though Win7 is out. When it comes to tech shit Im generally 2-3 models behind and that how I deal with it.

Id much rather be behind 2-3 model versions then try to always be grabbing the newest, hot thing everytime it came out. If I did that, Id be wasting time in the line at best buy or on Amazon every day buying different shit for my house and tech and then wasting time trying to sell the old models on ebay or CL. I just rather wait a few years and make 1 big jump at 1 time and save myself the time and headache of all the upgrades/problems of new models.

anytime you buy something mac you have to realize that a better one comes out every year like clockwork.

just got your iphone? they are about to release new ones.

eliquid has it right, I finally upgraded my iphone from the 1st generation day 1 phone to the new one and I'm happy as shit, I don't care that the new ones are coming out.

unless the super small one is still gangster, then...fuck!

My parents regifted me an iPad for Christmas cause they never used it.... I know sweet ass regift huh?

Anyway, the plan was to play around with it till early February then sell it on eBay right before the iPad 2 came out, it was insane, mine retailed for 730 and used ones were going for 630. Then I'd buy a iPad 2...

Of course I got lazy and busy with work and never sold the damn thing.. now I'm stuck with a subpar iPad.. oh well.

I try to do this, too, but I'm not quite as far behind.

I rebuilt my computer about eight months ago and instead of throwing down $1,500 for the latest and greatest, I found a bunch of great deals on 6 or 12 month old equipment. It's fast as hell. I can play Call of Duty and shit at full detail and I spent less than $600 on it. Buying the cutting-edge stuff is too expensive.

Technology is always getting better, Apple and all the others are always coming out with new products - don't worry, the people that buy the ipad2 today will wish they had waited until next year with the ipad3 comes out. Instead, market the ipad2 and then you can take that money and buy what you want without guilt because Apple paid for it - not you.

Reliable rumors have it that ipad 3 or rather ipad 2b are coming out this fall.

My wife bought me a 64gb wifi ipad for Christmas and was really upset last night when she found out about the ipad2. Me on the other hand? I got to play with my current ipad for about 3 months before everyone else had their ipad2 and it has PLENTY of power for what "I" want to do with it. I don't really have anyone to do Facetime with and am NOT going to edit videos on it.

Since my wife had it custom engraved for me, I'll skip this generation and upgrade next year, while handing down my current ipad to my daughter.

like other people have said, release cycles are consistent. if there is an ipad 2b / 3 this fall it will be different and not a direct upgrade. I'm guessing smaller (7 inches) and cheaper.

Apple isn't stupid, they know exactly how often to release product updates, how much to include in those updates to get people to buy them. Usually I buy second gen items and upgrade every 2 years (iphone 3g instead of original then to iphone 4, ipad 2 instead of original) because it seems to be the sweet spot.

Pretty much everyone i know that bought an original ipad is still really happy with theirs and most people arent upgrading just for cameras and a thinner device with a faster chip. This is more a play for the people who were waiting to see if it was gonna stick around.

Apple is absolutely dominating the tablet market and while smartphones overall are still up in the air for who will win, I'd predict they stay way ahead of honeycomb in tablets.

Also one other thing I'd say to people is apple products definitely keep their resale value so their shouldnt be too much buyer's remorse. If you want to upgrade, sell your old one. This ebay auction is about to end it has a used 64 gb wifi ipad gen 1 model (no 3gs) going for $619 !!! http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-iPad-Wi-F...=US_Tablets&hash=item45f9095942#ht_500wt_1156

Its funny you mention this because I was just looking at some numbers last week. I have a 2008 non-unibody MBP, still under apple care. 2.4Ghz, 4Gb ram, etc. I figured hey maybe I can get some cash for this one and buy a new fancy model. So I check apples tradein/recycle thing and it says they will give me $350 (LOL), I then check ebay and its like $400 if flawlessly perfect.

So 2008 MBP = $3,000 (top of the line) 2011 = $350. I should have learned my lesson and did what goldmercury does.
