ironic Guru bullshit

There's one thing that I REALLY disagree with Jon about...

To paraphrase, he said "you don't charge for help unless you're a doctor".

Well fuck. I guess I got ripped off by my mechanic for fixing my car. I got ripped off by my designer for helping with graphics. I'm going to ask my plumber to start fixing my shit for free...

...I'm being facetious.

What's 10,000 hours of industry experience worth? Or the specialized knowledge that comes with it?

Hint: Not free.

You want Jon's advice, connections or experience? Pay for it. If you don't no one is forcing you.

"Guru bullshit"?

Yeah, there's snake-oil out there. But there's also the real-deal. Straight from the trenches stuff that can make or break you, and you can't even put a pricetag on that.

You can either take the attitude of "Jon's selling out" or "fuck yes, this is the guy I need to learn from".

There's plenty of free advice out there. The problem with "free" is that it's usually worth what you pay. A guy like Jon could 100x your income for a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. If you can't see that, pass.

I'm not planning on paying for a consult with Jon, but I never say never.

One thing I've always hated about this forum is that people expect everything for free. Selling specialized knowledge is blasphemy. To me that's incredibly closed minded. I'd gladly pay for advice that I believe will advance my business. Learning from those who you aspire to be can compress decades of learning into days.

Jon is offering something of real value. The most valuable investment I've ever made is in my own education. I disagree with Jon on a lot of things, but I think giving this opportunity to the community is a great service on his behalf.

Specialized knowledge is invaluable. You can either pay for it, or get your teeth kicked in for 10 years until it clicks. I have no problem with Jon making this offer, I appreciate it. There's a saying "Penny wise and pound foolish"... Meaning people will skimp out on a few bucks because they see it as an "expense" - while those who see it as an investment will reap incredible rewards.

I rarely agree with Jon. I've criticized a lot of his posts and ideas. I don't suck up to him and I would give exactly zero fucks if I was banned from here. But for the RIGHT person this is the opportunity of a lifetime.

BUT...

1. This is his forum. I do enjoy it, I love the community he's built.

2. If he wants to charge money for advice, consider it an opportunity. He's offering specialized knowledge that you can't find anywhere at any price - if you feel it's right for you take him up on it. If not - don't bitch, it's not like he hasn't given enough value away for free already.

Haha. All it took was 4 words from Jon and Wayn3 stopped posting.

I don't understand how some of the people here fail to differentiate between the typical low-quality guru garbage with a million high pressure upsells...and something like this, where you're getting personalized advice from someone with more connections and years of experience than 99.9% of the people in the industry.

No, Jon's not going to win any awards for modesty in the near future, but he's smart and experienced and I don't know many people around here who wouldn't get some kind of benefit from his advice. I know there have been times where I've described some situation to him and he said something that ended up making me more money or saving me a lot of time/frustration. He's very adept at zeroing in on areas that could be improved.

I was as surprised as anyone else to see he had gotten bored enough to make an offer like this, but I don't think anyone should question its value.
