So im sitting here in my comp class bored as fuck.. were going over applications for office.. im about to refresh my stats and head out this bitch in about 10 :thefinger:. But yeah does anyone think college is a joke for a imer? I was majoring in nursing but after i learned how fuckin hard and how low the pay was i dropped outta it and changed it to business (for now). Any input from you guys? what do you think of college for a entrepreneur?

College taught me a valuable lesson, after one and a half weeks and $5000 I realized I was wasting my time.

Business degrees are the new cop-out degree. Don't know what to do with your life? Parents don't want you to be an idiot? Just pick a random degree! Business sounds great. I also love how your major is now "business" where are you ITT tech? What kind of generalized bullcrap is that.

Is your goal to be self-employed, or do you want to work for the man (which is to say do you want to be underpaid and unappreciated by people who don't comprehend what you do)?

If you want to do the former, then going to college might be useful if you just take the courses you need (programming, design, marketing, etc.) But "getting a degree" is probably a waste to time given today's fuckyou economy. Bear in mind formal school is expensive compared to self-study.

But then, if you plan on being self-employed then you should be able to learn everything you need from books and online communities. If you don't have the self-discipline to do that then you probably won't make it being self-employed.

A degree in a sought-after expertise will get you in the door of a good employer during a good economy, but it is desirable only because "human resource" departments use degrees and certificates as filters to make their job of weeding out resumes a little easier, when in fact these thing have little to do with whether someone is a good prospective employee or can even do the job in question.

I had never partied or fucked so much in my life. I am going back.

Agreed, college is awesome, I made some lifelong friends and had a blast in general. I personally didn't retain a whole lot of details of what I "learned" (learned=memorized for about 3 days, then promptly forgot), but it's a great, albeit expensive, experience.

The funny thing is, I went to a top 5 mech engineering school, and the passing grade for some of the tests was like 35%. Half the time after talking to some of the A students I'd realize that they're actually fucking morons, and that they just study real hard (yes, this does include asians). There's a big difference between knowing the actual concepts, and studying the shit out of examples until it's basically just plug and chug. Just goes to show you that sometimes the "smartest" people in the classroom are only the ones that study the hardest. Luckily I had the answer books for most of the homeworks :thefinger:.

That being said, if you don't have the money, or are bored as fuck as above and want to do your own thing, you probably shouldn't be there. But it can also be good to have a degree to fall back on if you find yourself in a tough spot financially. In my experience, you're really just paying for the degree.

'Pre-business majors' are what the teachers call the students who are flunking out of engineering/ CS programs.

Seems kinda harsh, and personally, I don't see anything wrong with a business major if you take it with the right interests at heart.

Of the recent CS grads I know, none of them are looking for work, although they tend to do things like freak out if someone turns on fluorescent lights. Business majors have good people skills, which are further refined over the dozens of job interviews they go to after graduation.

You should modify your approach so that you're always looking to learn something new, especially when you are in a class that covers topics that may seem trivial on the surface.

Depends on how you're assessing it...both ways I assess it, in the end college was worth it.

I think most people who went to college, would agree that they had a blast at college. I don't want to sound like a phag, but there's more to life than working. Where are you going to have more fun? Partying at college, or sitting at a desk working? If it's sitting at a desk...than go do that.

From a learning/helping you make more money perspective I still think college ended up worth it for me, if for no other reason than it gave me time to think, analyze my own ventures, and mature...a bit. It also improved my communication (especially verbal skills), and gave me some basics for business, so for me personally it was worth it. However, I do understand, at the time I often wondered if any of my classes were worth a damn...from a learning standpoint, I think I could have learned all I did, and passed all the tests by combing 4 years into 1.

This response was way too long...

^Liar. He's just being mean.

OP, this board is FULL of threads where entrepreneurs are bashing the College Scam. Bottom line is; if you've made it to wickedfire, and want to make money yourself instead of being one of the sheeple who thinks you must get ahead in life by working for others; then you simply will never need a college degree, or a JOB for that matter.

^I agree, PJ, almost as retarded as College was.

I had never partied or fucked so much in my life. I am going back.
To all you Idiots who give one seconds' thought about going back to school just because of the good times; keep in mind that if you Just move to a campus area and hang out at the nearby campus haunts, then you'll have saved yourself tuition, books, and all that time you should have been studying!

no jesus fucking christ stop making these threads NO NO NO NO NO NO NO

This

threads like this are fucking retarded

and this.

I get a sinking feeling in my stomach every time I see any thread with the word "college" in it. I went for two years and left. I MIGHT go back just to complete the degree since I'm half way done but I'll probably just do it online if I do that. Idk, college is retarded IMO. Seems to be all the rage for people who didn't get to party at home but I got all that shit out of my system long before I went to college, so I don't know, def. don't recommend going though.

You'll get out of college what you put in.

... In terms of academics, yes. But primarily your own self-growth.

That being said it depends on the "tier" of college you go to.

*SIGH*

Another 5 post wonder that misses the point of what higher education is actually all about. It's not about money, or working for the "man", although your counselors will try to push you into a degree path because the greater mass of humanity needs that. They NEED a game plan...they NEED to be force fed shit like "Life Plans" and Religion, etc.

But that ain't really what college should be about, and it ain't what it will be to YOU if you think of it like you should, which is as an "Incubator" full of new ideas and knowledge, and interesting people that you would have NEVER discovered otherwise.

FUCK your business degree. Straight LA degree all the way, with some small business courses for nuts and bolts. Creative writing. Entrepreneurship. Art history. Psych. Sociology. Philosophy. THINK.

/2c.

Even if you don't "plan" on working for anyone at any point, you never know what life will throw at you, so having a degree in your back pocket is not a bad idea.

I'm 36 years old and have a business that is making me more money than I need, and there is no foreseeable end to it. Even with that being said, I just got back into college to finish my degree. Why? I only needed a few units to get my BS so I figured it was worth it just for my own satisfaction. Will I ever use it at this point..probably not. Do I remember any of the information I've learned, hardly any. But I did learn self discipline to get work done, and that will help you no matter what career you choose.

If I were 21 and doing IM, I would probably still get my degree, but I would sure as hell study something I was interested in.

Always have a backup plan, even if that plan is working for someone else while you try to get your IM empire off the ground. A degree will go a long way in your backup plan.
