Voted no, SEO (or PPC/media buyz/ppv/etc) is what you do do you can present your offer to your market.

Marketing = presenting your offer to a specific targeted market

Advertising = throwing shit out there and hoping somebody likes the smell

Traffic generation (like SEO) fits into both categories, depending the route/method.

Own multiple products, good thread.

I vote yes

SEO = Search engine optimization

It's not ranking, it's the act of optimizing either onsite and/or offiste in an attempt to get the one or more of the search engines to rank you well for a particular keyphrase.

Marketing = presenting your offer to a specific targeted market

By this definition it could be considered that by optimizing you are marketing to the search engines. You are attempting to influence view how they perceive your site/page and subsequently where they place you in their results for a given phrase.

You are saying "This page is the best page for you to rank number 1 for this keyword and here are all the reasons why: look at this amazing header tag, page url and how cleanly and quickly my page loads, your visitors are going to love all the related content I have on my site and some really authoritive sites in this niche have linked to me so you can consider me trustworthy and others have linked to me because they like my content so much and think it's worth sharing, have you heard all the people talking about me on twitter? I really think you should choose me for top spot"

It is the search engines you are marketing to not the traffic.

SEO is certainly a very important segment of your entire marketing plan. It helps generate business. You'll need to upgrade continuously, since the SEO strategies are dynamic.

Anybody who thinks SEO = MARKETING doesn't know what the hell they're doing. That's like saying world war = history.

SEO is an advertising channel (a fairly limited one IMO) and that's it
