I signed up for some contest at a basketball game a few weeks ago and I just got a call saying I had "won" and if I go on a 1 hour tour of some new resort, I get some scratch off shit where the minimum prize is $1200 and you're guaranteed to win a prize. Based on that wording and the lack of a disclaimer, they're saying that for 1 hour of your time they'll pay you a minimum of $1200 and anything less than that would constitute a breach of contract. But it sounded like bullshit and I didn't want to drive an hour to the place so I just hung up. Has anyone heard of shit like this, and is it a scam, or do you actually get the money?

Some of them are actually quasi-legit, but you will probably be handed an agreement and disclaimer at the door and then be forced to sit through a VERY HIGH pressure sales pitch first, and they can get very surly when you don't fall for their bullshit.

$1,200 sounds awfully high, too. I vote bullshit.

Run Away.

Yeah I was thinking they might have some type of last-minute disclaimer that ruins the entire thing. And it's not like I'm gonna sue them for $1200, so I'd have just wasted a few hours for nothing.

Have you never heard of timeshares?

Best way to get more free stuff when on vacation. Listen to a timeshare. Got a 150$ visa gift card for 1 hour of my time last time I was in Aruba. You just have to be able to listen to bullshit then say no I recommend taking a stopwatch with you too. My dad's friend told me a story of him from 25 yrs ago when they used to give away good shit. He had to listen to them pitch for 6 hours and he got a 3 day cruise off Florida for it. He went in there with a stop watch stood up when they started talking said you got 6 hours. 6 hour later he stood up showed them his stop watch and said give me my tickets then walked out.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^This!!

And your $1,200 prize is most likely a certificate that can only be used towards the PURCHASE of the timeshare. Lulz

I live in Florida and my friends & family seem to continually get suckered into these things with the promise of FREE cruises, hotel stays, or free amusement park tickets. ( I keep warning them, and some have gone through it more than once!! LOL)

They wind up spending not just 1 hour, but 4 hours to a DAY on their "Lecture Tours". (Some have had them come back the next day as well.)

Then they try to regale me with their intrepid adventures. Lulz

Ever see this episode of South Park? Asspen (Season 6, Episode 3) - Full Episode Player - South Park Studios If not, it's worth putting up with the ADS to see just how those timeshare scams go. LOL

Exactly right. You can really clean up at these things, you just have to be a very patient guy to sit there and listen to all the hulabaloo. A buddy of mine gets cruises and trips all the time like this. I honestly rather just pay for my trips than endure a bunch of douchebags trying an onslaught of annoying pressure sales tactics. I'd probably end up saying something really out of line and getting kicked out anyway. I HATE when people talk to me like I'm stupid, and that's exactly what they do when you resist buying what they're sellin. But if you are game you can definitely get free swag.

Would high pressure pitches like those work on us too? I can see them working on most members of the general public who are too passive and subservient to say no, but I'd probably just sit there texting the entire time, and after the time is up I'd just keep saying "where's my money" to whatever they say to me. or are you not allowed to do that?

I just went to one of these last week. Got $150 in Visa gift cards and two nights free in a local hotel.

Presentation sucked, an hour of bullshit and kinda high pressure sales.

But getting paid $150 for an hour while I sat in the back on my phone refreshing my stats was rather pleasant. When it was done, I said I would think about it and let them know....done and done.

Haaa, nice. If more of these things went on, people could make a living off of it. $150 per hour is a NICE rate, lol...
