A Detroit man set up a site to solicit donations to help him leave the city. Story below, but here's my question, is his landing page:

1) great because it's so bad and you assume he's legit by how bad it is
or
2) terrible and he could get more conversions with a better design

Story: Unemployed pipefitter asking for donations to helpmeleavedetroit.com | Detroit News - - MLive.com

Sean Bush is hoping for 4,000 of the micro-donations to help cover the costs of an EMT training course in California. "I just need this small boost, then I can maintain on my own.," he writes. "I will work as an emt, then go to school for paramedic at night."

On an almost related note - Detroit made the cover of the new Sports Illustrated which I thought was cool until I read the article. 70% of our murders go unsolved?!?!? Holy shit. What the fuck are the homicide detectives actually doing? We've got plenty of murders to go around, they should be able to accidentally solve more than 30% of them.

Well, his design is suited for what he is wanting to do.

After all, would you believe him with a professionaly designed LP? Many people probably wouldn't to be honest.

Genius? Well, this depends on your definition of genius. It doesn't meet my definition because it seems that he saw the part on CNN where the unemployed couple had made a billboard in hopes of getting a job. So, after watching it he gained the idea of using a webpage as his billboard since he's too broke to get one made.

Terrible? Well, it really doesn't meet the qualifications that I have for terrible. He did do well for what he's trying to do and I can't really down him for that.

At least he is trying to do something, but California might not be the best place to go for one in a bad financial situation like he claims to be.

it's genius. for about a tenth of a second i wanted to ship the 4 grizzies. if he does some split-testing he'll be on his way.
