I've always hated the idea of a cruise...

I think they usually mean as opposed to land/beach vacations, not in general.

Yeah - I like to see an actual real place rather than an artificially made-up place. I like to explore culture and language rather than travel to a different climate to enjoy the exact same thing I have at home.

Clearly I don't have this at home though, so I think I'd be quite happy for a week or maybe two at a push.

I also really can't see the attraction of being out in the middle of the ocean for a large part of a vacation.

I can't say the typical regimented touristy cruises would be to my liking, but the nicer world cruises on smaller luxury "boutique" ships usually stay in one place for more than a day. They have proper expeditions launched from the boat and you don't have to travel with the boat all year, you can stay in one place longer if you like, and fly to catch up with the ship at your leisure. Plus you actually own a residence on the ship, an apartment that you can decorate to your liking. It's pretty pimp.

You should really reconsider going on a cruise. I've been on 4 and I love it. My wife and I alternate between luxurious cruises and low-budget backpacking trips. Cruising for me is about the destination ports and the comfort aboard the ship. During the day, you're usually in a city or on some adventure. Unless it's a "sea day", because then you're usually relaxing on the ship. I always pick the cruises with few sea days. In the evenings, you can indulge in excellent food and entertainment (theater, casino, bars, ...).

If you want to consider a cruise, try Discount Cruises, Last Minute Cruises, Cruise, Cruise Line, Cruise Vacation. They sell the remaining cabins with discounts of around 70 to 80%.

Funny you say that, I was just researching world cruises (I was seeing a 180 day one that looked super pimp)

For me, I divide vacations in two: 1- Adventure, 2- Relax

If i want adventure, a cruise is a terrible option.

If I want to just relax and forget about everything, soak up the sun, I'll take a cruise or go to a beach resort and just vegetate/read/drink.

Why in the world would anyone hate the idea of a cruise?

Germs, physical vulnerability (ship sinking, no control over course), being disarmed while boarding.

Large cruise ships are very vulnerable targets, imo. I don't think there's a terrorist hiding under my bed, but a large cruise ship must look juicy.

If someone were to fall or be pushed overboard, that will be the end of them.

Legal-wise, people on cruise ships generally do not have the same legal protections they may have in their home country.

I'm not talking about the link in the OP, but just in general.

I just prefer to soak up the genuine local culture, spend some time there, get to know locals, chat, learn language, eat different food, enjoy different music, laugh at different humor (or not), generally experience something different.

I can see the attraction of wanting your own luxury wherever you travel and I myself enjoy this too, but normally only when travelling for work or a function (like a party / wedding etc.)

To me a vacation is about doing something new, living differently, experiencing something you would never experience.

That said, that boat looks like an amazing place to hire for a massive fuck-off party!!!

So I take it you are the type who walks up to a 20th floor hotel room to not get 'germs' from the elevator? You also don't fly?

I mean, yeah, germs exist, but... I've heard of this really awesome thing called an immune system.

You do realize, that pretty much EVERYTHING you do to get the to cruise ship is 10000x more dangerous than the cruise itself. The car ride, the shower, hell even the airplane ride is more dangerous.

Your statistical probability of surviving a cruise... is quite good. Probably better than your odds of surviving a night out, a quick shower, or yes... even sitting at your computer and having lightening hit your house and send the current through the houses electrical system until it hits you.

I've found the best option to protect from all these:

The only reason you might not like a cruise is not enough adventure/too much planning/too little time to get to know the local culture. But that isn't the idea of a cruise. It is to get pampered and relax.

I'm a bit baffled you listed germs as your first reason for not liking a cruise... is this a phobia?

Did you know that, "all the bacteria living inside you would fill a half-gallon jug; there are 10 times more bacterial cells in your body than human cells"? sourc

I might walk stairs for exercise. But you do make a good point. It's more likely that healthier people will be taking the stairs. I'm not a fan of public bathrooms, either.

It's not that rare to hear about various outbreaks on cruise ships. I'm not afraid to be on one. Someone asked why anyone wouldn't like them, so I offered up a few reaons.

No, I don't, but for different reasons.

Those sorts of statistics are fairly meaningless for individuals, even if I believed the 10000x figure you made up.
