Anyone else excited for this fight? I'm rooting for St Pierre but I think Shields just might be the person to beat him

I've been a St. Pierre fan since his days in the UCC (Where he got his start.) Shields looks like a contender, but I think a lot of it is just hype. Look how much Dan Hardy was hyped up...then look how he miserably failed.

Shields seems like a deserving guy, but you can't give anyone a chance against St. Pierre until you see them in the ring against him.

CAN'T WAIT! :D

This is probably gonna be GSPs first real fight. Jake shields isn't your typical so so fighter that the UFC throws at GSP. Jake is 26-4 and he basically is the same style of fighting as GSP they both are wrestlers and love to take people to the ground. I was pretty disappointed with Shields last fight, but then again like I said he has the fighting style of GSP. Both guys are kinda lay and pray. I still give it to GSP, but this is probably gonna be his toughest opponent yet.

GSP is a machine and should take this easily. But you can't completely dismiss Shields (even though he is a one dimensional fighter). Odds are around +320, would have to toss a little money at him / out the window for fun.

GSP has not just beat tough guys, but he's beat the best of the BEST. GSP is a master when it comes to strategy. I'm definitely giving this to GSP, even though Jake Shields is a different kind of fighter than the most he has faced.

Really looking forward to this. Will be a lot closer than many people think but I think GSP will win.

I cannot wait for this. I am taking a client and got sick seats.

55K people, thats insane!!!

I was in Montreal for the last GSP fight, and the place was rocking. I can only imagine what will happen in Toronto.

I agree that it will be a closer fight then people think...but GSP will win.

The more I watch the pre-fight shows, the more I feel it's gonna be another blowout for GSP.

*I guess hall of famer Matt Hughes, BJJ phenom BJ Penn and wrestling god Josh Koscheck are all average huh?

Considering Jake beat Dan Henderson and Okami (he will be fighting Silva soon) in a higher weight class. Leads me to believe Jake is no chump and can beat anyone on a good day.
But and its a big But. GSP is on another level when it comes to ground. Jake will never KO anyone. GSP has great stamina, he wont have a blowout like Henderson did. Also looking at Jakes last fight with Kampman, I laugh at the thought people give him a chance against GSP.

You forgot Matt Hughes.

I should have added one more

I should be going with you Jared!!! I can't believe I didn't include myself. It's going to be a great fight. Plus, Toronto fans can bring the house down:-)) I can't wait for it!

I see what you're saying, since Henderson is a good fighter. But...he is an older fighter, with a hard right hand -- who can take almost anyone to the ground if he can't knock the guy out. He has very little to offer on the ground other than vicious ground & pound (being submitted 3 or 4 times by accomplished grapplers like Shields.)

Comparing a two-dimensional fighter to GSP is how fighters like Dan Hardy are given a chance, despite being absolutely tooled by him come fight night. Only a lightning-fast power puncher can beat Georges on his worst day (I.e. Anderson Silva.)

Shields will not be an easy fight. I always thought the guy to beat GSP would be a strong wrestler, ala Jake Shields/ Chael Sonnen (if Sonnen were ever to drop down a weight class which he has hinted at before).

I wrestled at Brock University for 3 years. I wasn't anywhere near the level of many of the UFC guys, but I can tell a superior wrestler from a guy with average skills. The link above shows a snippet from the Shields vs Kampman fight. Shields is not a superior wrestler folks.

Put him up against Hughes, Koscheck...or even one of my fellow Alumns Sean Pierson (fighting on the same card as St. Pierre/Shields) and it would become quite obvious that he isn't on their level. I'm not hating on the man -- he just isn't at that caliber. Shields is a grinder like Jon Fitch, not a superior technician.

^^I'm not talking about his defensive grappling ability in the above statement. He appears to be a top level BJJ fighter.
