While looking at some jobs I came across this description;

Sr. Online Marketing Manager

"...and the ability to multitask and operate in an entrepreneurial and matrixed environment. Our ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate a history of innovation and success in a fast paced, constantly evolving environment. "

Whoa!

Matrixed means, it is neither projectized nor functional.
Power is shared between the manager of the specific engagement/project and the functional managers.

In most of the cases, all it means is that there will be more managers
to kick you around!
There are a few companies which have implemented it decently, though.

These matrixes are no laughing matter - they're systems for corporate organization that, as jill_domains said, result in you having two bosses to report to. These systems are *loved* by north american academia and are included in every strategy textbook, even though they are very rarely used in the real world. With a matrix system in place, you can fool both your bosses by saying to each that you're doing a project for the other etc. Totally unusable in the real world - run the other way.
