So we all know how to pull thousands of keywords that we want to work with, but is there anyway to group these lists into tight adgroups? I swear 50-60% of my time building a new campaign goes into the tedium of categorizing my keywords in excel.

Any tips or software options out there for automating, or easing this process?

i have a question, i have heard two methods of grouping keywords. i have heard of people starting with say a thousand and grouping these into small related groups, say no more than 50 in each group. then i have also heard of people starting with a small list of keywords and expanding from there. i am thinking for this method you would maybe make groups with one main keyword and then expand each of those groups from the one main keyword in each(im not sure if that makes sense).

basically my question is which is better, starting from a big list and grouping them or first making groups and expanding them. it seems to me if you take a huge list it would be a lot harder to keep track of what you are doing. if starting with a huge list is preferred by anyone maybe you could explain your process of breaking that list into groups.

you start with a small list when you build a campaign and work on testing to see if the campaign is profitable first. This also works well cus you can get more data if you're on a budget is your keyword list is smaller.

when your campaign is profitable then I'd rebuild the keyword list/groups bigger, with a special focus on the words that were converting.

There are some tools out there that will do grouping to some extent, but from what I hear you can't fully rely on them - leaving you to go through everything manually anyways.

I still think the best approach is to manually sort out your groups in Excel. A tedious and boring task, yes, but it pays off to do it right. Once you have it done - the rest of the keyword work (like actually setting up the campaigns/ads) becomes easier with tools like SpeedPPC or similar.
