The missus and I just had a long discussion about this... Well not if he's a fat fuck, but if he is right or wrong to make Mega.

Naturally I was of the opinion that the man is a hero for providing true encryption to the world that the government isn't likely to crack... But at the same time, he's pushing it in Hollywood's face basically shouting: "Quit your jobs now, I just fired you all."

Let's face it, if this thing works as advertised, Piracy won't be skimming a little anymore. It's going to destroy hollywood. Lives will be ruined, the industry probably won't survive it in any recognizable form.

So after a long talk about intellectual property and all that stuff, I'm starting to change my opinion about piracy... In short, the way Kim's going about this is wrong. As much as I feel the product is necessary, History won't be kind to him if & when no one makes movies anymore... We'll all be like: "Fuck, I really wanted to see Avengers 3 but now they aren't going to make it... THANKS KIM!"

OK that may be a bit extreme of an example but you get the point.

Here's the thing we really should be discussing; If he were truly a great, moral guy who wanted to make the world a better place and give use truly private file sharing without hurting anyone, he could always limit the # of receivers per file to 1.

Think about that for a sec. If he made Mega do all that it does, but each file can only be downloaded by 1 individual, then Hollywood & the record industry wouldn't be out of work, and everyone could get the true benefit here: Truly private, super-encrypted communications.

...Of course then he wouldn't be able to monetize mega. So we know that won't ever be considered. Hell, he's got investors and owes them a profit so even if he wanted to now he couldn't.

So although I'm generally against intellectual property in the first place, there was a way to offer this particular wonder of modern technology without destroying the livelihoods of literally thousands of people and ruining our new-movie-watching experience for the rest of our lives.

So in my book, Kim's no hero, but his commercial venture offers a benefit that a hero could have invented, tied to something that I'd consider cold and almost evil now.

Perhaps if uncle sam does take mega down somehow, the person to revive it without the evil part can be a real hero and limit transfers to 1 recipient.

How are these keys going to be distributed? I would assume through forums like they already are. The entertainment industries already have guys/bots on all these forums reporting all the files for copyright infringement. Mega have stated they will delete those files. So what's going to change in that regard?

What am I missing?

If he's stealing your shit and giving it away for free, he a cunt.

If your downloading a bunch of movies and music for free, he's a genius.

Piracy will never be able to cripple hollywood, those greedy fuckers just want it all. Even if i'm able to download a movie, i still go and watch it in the theater as i prefer the high quality. Now when i need to watch a movie from 1998 or 2000 and i download it, i believe it's perfectly fine, hollywood has already recouped most of there cost and i am not going to pay $14.95 for a movie that a college professor held me mandatory to watch. Also most people now adays have netflix, they are okay with paying month to watch movies and tv shows, i really don't get what hollywood is still bitching about, if the guy can't pay 7.95 a month for netflix obviously he is a peasant, if your suing him, your worse then a peasant. all in all FUCK HOLLYWOOD.

I voted he's a cunt because he looks like one not because of the piracy shit.

You sound kinda naive, bro. Look what happened to DVD sales... One of their biggest monetizations of olde has all but dried up already. And then this will make pirates much more bold, having a tool the gov can't crack.

Lulz... First of all you assume that all people would go to the movie if they had a choice not to, which a lot like myself would not... I honestly haven't been to a theater since Avatar's opening, and that was just to see what all the hype was about on their 3D glasses.

Second, you assume that home-viewing tech and image quality aren't going up much, which they always do, so clearly in the near future you wouldn't have to give up any quality to watch these at home.

I don't like the MPAA or the RIAA one bit, and wouldn't even pee on their CEOs to put out any fires that may start there, but the fact is that the entire industry and every actor, grip, stuntman, and songwriter doesn't deserve to be out of work... Which will be the case as soon as their movies and songs just aren't profitable anymore.

I think he's a fucken idiot for being cocky like he's doing, and trying to rub this in the MPAA and government's faces. I see a car accident or something on the horizon for Kim.

You don't stick your nose up at multi-billion dollar companies, and expect to walk away unscathed.

Hollywood can suck it. Most of the crap they produce denigrates Western civilization and promotes alien values. If I see another film where a white man is saved by a genius black man, my head is gonna explode.

If he's successful, perhaps movie theaters will have to focus more on the movie experience. Piracy hasn't killed music because people see bands for the experience. Maybe that can happen to movies.

That's not true. The technology to make movies is already there, and the artists with the desire to create will always be there. If the industry transforms that might even be good for the art.

This is the kind of a sci-fi movie that a one-man operation, a student does nowadays:

Some of the funniest or scariest stuff was also done on low budget (trailer park boys, that horror movie shot in one house, etc.).

Same shit that Hollywood does for millions of dollars, it's all evoking same kind of emotions anyways. But hollywood makes literally hundreds of bad movies full of cliches and gets paid way too much for that.

If mega does well, it will cleanse the whole motion picture art and remove all the rubbish, reduce the overblown profits and at the same time will let talent and persistence rise up.

Also if mega does well there is so much more to be discovered in entertainment. New ways to monetize a movie, new cinema experiences, new something - whoever nails it will make a new breakthrough.

tl;dr - if it fucks the industry - why not, it won't affect the art.

DVD sales? You are talking about old technologies. Of course its gonna dry up. No one's paging around these days. Music was dying, itunes gave them a rebirth. Movie industry has gotta innovate or die. If artists make it easily accessible people pay for it. I know i did when Louis CK did it and when Jim Gaffigan followed suit. Easy to pay for, easy to consume content and i am willing to pay for it.

Kim Schmitz/Dotcom is the "win at all costs" kind of guy. I think he's a narcissist. His philosophy of "win at all costs" has landed him big financial success, but has landed him in big trouble too. He has a criminal history that dates back to his late teens.

Both? Stupid poll is stupid.

Also, Luke, it's Hollywood's fault for not innovating. If Mega starts to put serious pressure on them then they'd have to innovate, however I still see this is as unlikely. Billion dollar businesses don't go down overnight, it takes years of slow crumbling. People wouldn't suddenly switch to Mega all at once. We also don't know exactly what Mega Movies is, for example -- who is to say it's not just a Netflix competitor?

There'll be a gap in the market to fill where you can pay for better service, and people will pay for that convenience. That money will make its way back to the studios.

The new Mega site won't kill movies/music in the same way that the old mega site didn't.

It will hopefully make the industry more efficient though.
