Any good books that the php gurus would recommend for someone just learning php from the ground up?

Knowing scripting languages is great, but I think that if you really just want to make money with the fewest complications - hire people who know PHP who can do what you need quickly instead of slaving over code for hours. Concentrate on learning how to market first, and add coding as you go.

Also, plenty of PHP scripts are available for free, or nearly free. When I didn't know HTML I really was screwed, so anybody who doesn't know that had better go learn it!

Also, if you don't know PHP you should probably put a shotgun into your mouth and pull the trigger. There's no need to live.

I agree, and would say in general PHP is a great "gateway language" that can help you get started in other more complex ones

PHP is the marijuana of programming languages.
