Living arrangement effecting my bottom line. How to hande?

Hey guys,

I came here for help with the last serious issue I had (Someone fucking me on a web design job) and the advice I received worked out well for me.

I live in a house with some other guys. It's a college house. It sucks. But it's all I can afford right now, and I had to get out of my old place fast.

The problem: The internet has been not working for the better part of 2 months now. Getting the land lord to handle it has been problematic. We had the cable company out once, and after more crying from me, they came out again today. All the TV's in the house did not work as well as the internet (Except for the land lords son who mysteriously, had great tv).

Anyhow, after I knew the internet was fixed today I tried to go online, only to not even see my wireless network. I went into my roomates room where the modem and router live (because he's too cheap to buy a wireless internet card) and I see the router is unplugged. Then, I see he has taken the line from the modem to the router and just put it right into his computer.

I've made it VERY clear for the last 4 months living here that I make my money with the internet.

I asked him how long he's been doing this, and he's said he's done it for a while now whenever the router stops working. I'm LIVID. When I confronted him about it, he siad "Why should I suffer because the router is broken?"

We split the utilities 3 ways. I pay over 100/month for my "Service".

I have a friend bringing a new router over TONIGHT. I told him that once it is installed, he is no to touch it. I feel as though the modem and router are not HIS because we all pay for it.

I need input.

1. Get your access back up.
2. Let the roommate BS go.
3. Use what can learn here to make some money.
4. Move the fuck out.

I don't mean to oversimplify it, but it seems like the best solution to me.
 
Threaten to make the dumbass who unplugs the router next time to compensate you for the money you lost being unable to access the internet.

Also, make sure that new router is working fine so your roommate doesn't have to plug his computer directly into the modem.
 
webthisway's #4 suggestion is probably your best bet. Just do what you can to ensure you can work - reiterate it to these guys that you *need* the intertubes - and just GTFO. I did the roommate thing when I was 18 and ended up wanting to strangle one of them. I live by myself now and it's awesome.

Sage. It's hard to see the light sometimes.

The key here is the internet, I could care less about how it gets accomplished. I might have been losing sight of that.
 
be friendly and tell him to let you know if the router is having issues. Tell him you'll fix it, which you hopefully can. You were probably a dick so now he unplugs it for kicks
 
Josh - I want to add something to by previous comments.

Dealing with roommates is one of the most difficult and frustrating things you may ever deal with. In my experience, the best way to go is to not have them. If you do need to live with discourteous and disrespectful people, set a goal to get yourself in a better situation. Until then, take care of yourself as much as possible and expect that people suck.

Roommates suck. They always have. I'm married and have two kids and my roommates still suck.
 
Buy the S.O.B. a USB wireless receiver, tell him "And don't say I never do anything for you", take the router & modem back to your room, then block his access to the net as the admin... see how he likes it...

The less vengeful option is to stop chipping in for the net collectively, and you can get your own wireless/mobile modem. Australia's pretty arse backwards for that stuff, and we already have 10gb/month plans for about $70, so people in the US must be able to get a better deal than that.
 
I totally wasnt a dick. I've been stealing the neighbors internet for the last few months. I moved my room, and the new room is a fucking bomb shelter. No cell, shitty 802.11 signal. Looking to change the situation rather than fix it is a winner.

seriously tho, if you're stuck leeching wifi and have a shitty signal in your new room, just build a cheap yagi and hang it out your window...
 
also consider getting a mobile phone with net access card if all else fails it's not that expensive and you'll have constant internet
 
So you have two options if you're too broke to move out:

1) Bro rape the shit out of him. Tell him the next time he unplugs the router you're plugging in.

2) Stop paying for the internet and get a broadband card. ($50/month)

Its probably not because hes a prick, its because hes a stupid mother fucker when it comes to that shit. He figures - hell it works for me when I plug it into my computer....


Personally I would come into his room in the middle of the night and turn his lights on and reset the router [sounds like that's what needs to be done] and if he has it plugged into his computer straight up I would let him have it.

The only real thing you can to is move spend some money and get a shit ton of Ethernet cable and run the router up to your room and buy him a usb wireless thing so he can be the bitch.

It's honestly because he is a dip shit. Oh yeah and if your shit doesn't work and the landlord doesn't want to fix it, the answer is fucking simple. DEDUCT IT FROM YOUR RENT! There is nothing your landlord can do about it. Being lazy isn't an excuse in the courts eyes, they have to live with their laziness. Either that or bitch at your cable company till they give you free shit. Always worked for me.
