Looking for 27"+ Monitors - what to buy?

I don't know about you guys but I'm sick of nearly every monitor out there having a resolution of 1920x1080 just because it's true 1080p. But this means almost all monitors from 22 to 28in have that crappy resolution. This limits options and competition for those ranges of monitors.. and makes non-1920x1080 ones much much more expensive.

I've avoided upgrading my old school Acer 1920x1200 LCD just because I like the extra real estate on it. That res used to be a standard till everyone switched to this 1080 crap.

I've heard good things about the Dell IPS but prices for the non-standard resolutions just have not come down at all really compared to the standard ones. I'm cheap sometimes..

But the prices on 1920 x 1200 res monitors have come down in price over the years. My Dell 24" was about $700 when I bought it. Now Dell has 2 flavors of 24" Ultrasharp at 1920 x 1200, one is $369 and the other is $449, which are great prices for what are premium monitors. The Asus PA248Q is a superb monitor, is 1920 x 1200 and $328 after rebate. You could buy 3 of them for the same price as one Dell 30 inch or Apple display.

Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24" Monitor with LED

Dell UltraSharp U2410 24" Monitor with PremierColor

ASUS - Display- ASUS PA248Q

ASUS PA248Q 24.1IN Widescreen LED Backlit IPS LCD Monitor 1920X1200 6MS 80M:1 HDMI DVI DisplayPort

You're not really paying much more for the extra pixel real estate, and you get all the extra features, better color reproduction, more inputs and better ergonomics. So many of the cheaper monitors don't even raise and lower these days let alone rotate to portrait mode.

The best is apple cinema display...

No they're not. For starters, it's probably a Samsung or LG panel in them and the color reproduction on all the models I've listed is just as good. They have mediocre ergonomics settings. On top of that they are GLOSSY, which is probably the biggest complaint among reviewers because it's absolute shit to work on a glossy screen all day. Add to that the $1000 price tag. It just doesn't make any sense to shell out that kind of cash when you can get better options for less.

Thanks Fatbat. One reason I didn't buy the Dell before was because I noticed the response time was worse than my current. My current is 2ms I think. The cheaper dell is 8ms, 6ms for the more expensive one.

Does response time matter as much as I think it does in gaming or video? Or am i making too much of response time?

The human eye doesn't notice a difference below 10ms so I wouldn't worry about it too much. My current monitor is 6ms and my latest build plays BF3 at 60-100 fps with everything maxed and I don't have any issues with blur or smearing.

Can response time drop as the monitor gets older? Just my stepdad moved out recently, and took the LCD TV with him - when I went over to his the other day, the TV that'd never had problems with ghosting, had some pretty major ghosting visible while watching a DVD (on the same DVD player we'd always used). Or was it probably just a subtle small change of hardware, like a different SCART cable?

I really don't know TBH. In older LCDs I see discoloration, bleeding and light leakage. I suppose it's possible that overall performance could degrade over time as well. If you're using a SCART cable I assume this is an older model without HDMI? In monitors with both VGA and DVI inputs, the picture quality using the VGA is noticeably inferior to the DVI. You could try switching up the cables to see if that would help.

How the hell do you guys manage to have 3 27" monitors in front of your eyes? How close are you guys to the screens? I have 3, but mine are 24" 23" and 22" and I can't even think about going bigger.

This. I have two 19s and I'm happy. I would consider a 3rd, but not very motivated (I'm happy as is)

3x 27 would make me go blind.

I have a 27" IPS monitor and it is fucking glorious.

Don't settle for anything less. Koreans are selling these so cheap it's ridiculous.

I picked up a Crossover myself, but a lot of people opt for the even cheaper Catleap. If you have the cash they say Crossovers have better build quality.

Just hop on ebay and pick one up. Why are you even still reading this? Just do it.
