I currently have a Resellers and I'm having a horrible time with it. I can't really justify getting a dedicated yet so I'm going for the next best thing, a VPS. My budget is around the $50-$80 a month price range.

I'm currently looking at media temple's stuff and it looks pretty enticing.

(mt) Media Temple - (dv) Dedicated-Virtual Server

I heard they had a lot of problems before, but I think they fixed them. Anyone using media temple that can shed some light on their service? Any VPS reccommendations will be welcome as well.

As I just posted this in another thread, I have two VPS's with NyNOC (aff link) and their support is top notch.

I had an account with MT for a few months; their support is good but their "grid server" is a marketing gimmick. Not sure about their VPS's though. KnownHost is also good for VPS's.

add wired tree to the list as well.

WiredTree – Managed VPS – Virtual Private Servers

I highly recommend Liquidweb.com for a VPS. They have excellent tech support they and are easy to reach. There are several plans within your budget of $50-$80 (check over at the webhostingtalk.com forum for their specials... can save you some money and get a few upgrades.

hmm so I've decided not to go with media temple anymore. I've selected 2 from the posts here and from webhostingtalk reviews.

liquidweb
wiredtree

are currently on my list due to good reviews. haven't checked out nynoc yet.

The only reason I moved from Media Temple to LiquidWeb is their server management. LiquidWeb fully manages their VPS's and their tech support is great. Send me a PM if you want a coupon for a LiquidWeb VPS.

imho, if you're going to be spending that much anyway you should just get a dedicated box...

check the specials some of the hosting companies run, you can usually pick up a cheap starter box for $79/mo from one of em...

I actually just got a VPS today, im sure people will crap talk them, but I went with KnownHost - They have pretty good prices for a VPS and according to people on WebHostingTalk there Texas datacenter is supposed to be top notch in addition to nothing but good reviews in terms of support.

Try dreamhostps.com, you basically choose exactly how much you need and can raise it or lower it any time.

for the love of all that's holy stay away from the dreamhost VPS... or the "crash-o-matic" as I have come to call it...

I had a shared hosting account with dreamhost for almost 2 years without any major issues... was using a bit more than my fair share of resources, so they "upgraded" me to the dreamhost PS... I'll spare you all the details like it crashing for NO FUCKING REASON every other day and being down for 12+ hours while waiting for support to respond to a critical ticket, etc. - needless to say you should avoid it like the plague if you value things like uptime...

Thats shitty....

I've never had really any problems with them. Maybe I'm just lucky.

lots of people have had problems with them... do some searches...

like I said, I had an account with them for almost 2 years without major issues... I had a good long run with them and had some months where I pushed over 5TB of bandwidth... had I done the same elsewhere it would have cost me a fortune...

if you just have a few smallish sites and you don't push much pipe, you should be ok... but if you grow a bit larger, that's when they'll fail on you...

^^

it's not a good sign if slhost can't even load their homepage :x then again knownhost isn't loading for me either. wtf...

all these offers are too expensive.
you can find similar offers for half the price.
each VPS of mine has 384Mb and costs me less than $26.
and you can get debian etch.
