Low Carb Diet > Low Fat Diet

After doing some reading (following some leads on here!) and watching the videos, I'm gradually going high fat / low carb.

I quit sugar in coffee etc about 18 months ago. I cut bread about 2 months ago. I quit pasta, and living in Italy this is a challenge. I am weaning off pizza. I've cut cake, biscuits, candy and that sort of crap 100% and I've axed practically all wheat based foods from my diet. I don't think I eat any processed food now. I reduced fruit a bit. I've increased my fat intake a lot - bacon and eggs + valeriana and tomatoes for breakfast, or fried potatoes, a small steak 3 or 4 times a times a week, butter on my potatoes. More fish. I eat a lot more veg and am loving it. I probably eat more food. I've just bought another book with more food ideas.

Results ...

It's not about weight for me but for those interested, I usually hover around 80 - 85Kg / 187lb. Three weeks ago I weighed 80Kg / 176lb, now I'm 76.4Kg / 168lb. I find this amazing given the amount of food I'm eating.

My stomach fat has reduced slightly.

I am alert in the afternoon and feel like I have more energy.

I don't need to snack mid-morning or mid-afternoon and if I do feel snacky I eat a bit of fruit or a handful of sultanas.

And best part of all, I'm cooking a lot more and I really really enjoy my food. I was in a restaurant the other evening, in the wonderful city of Perugia, and I realised that I prefer my food to restaurant food. And that's a first.

Sadly my girlfriend is a hardcore vegan.

Thanks for sharing your experience man, I'm also trying to cut down on carbs. I just had an omelet and for the first time I didn't have any bread with it. My problem is alcohol though, I do enjoy beer and I hate light beer. Do you still drink or did you cut down on that too?

I don't drink beer as it's full of carbs. I drink red wine. Dry red wine is the best as it has the least carbs vs other wines

Completely out of the left field here and certainly not for diet-faddists, but I eat a balanced diet, try not to eat massive meals and exercise about 5 times a week.

I also have a curry most weeks, drink some beers here and there and ensure I know what I'm eating and when - be conscious of what you consume.

It works. Just don't be a gimp and fuck about flitting with shit. Use your head, exercise regularly, yes it's hard (do you like being fat?) and don't be a gluttonous twat. (I used to be 6 stone more than I am now and I'm kind of a big deal - check the username, yo.)

just focus on just calorie deficit unless u want to look like a ripped professional model or bodybuilder.
Yes while cutting carbs should be minimum coz u want the body to use the stored fat to give you anergy and not carbs.
Dietary fats and stored fats r different things. do not mix them up.
dietary fat within limits have some very important hormone regulation and other functions. so bump up the omegas.

Saying this from recent personal experience after cutting 22 Kgs of fat in 5 months and then gaining back 14 Kgs of muscle in the next 5 months.

Beer is on the goodbye list, though it's not a sacrifice because beer here in Italy is imo poor quality and I have been ordering wine when I'm out anyway. If people come round I buy some beers but I'll drink red wine.

My principle in all this is: my diet serves me, I don't serve my diet. So if I can't get the food I want I'll eat whatever's available, e.g. last week while away from home the only things on offer for breakfast were panini and pastries (because cakes are what Italians mainly eat for breakfast - in England you could get bacon and eggs), but that's ok, I went for a panini packed with meat and cheese. This is the opposite for my vegan girlfriend who could not eat anything for breakfast, literally she went hungry, but that (veganism - a shit diet imo) is another story.

I used to drink a powdered energy drink in the mornings and that gave me a zingy start to the day, but I read the label and it was basically a mass of carbs in liquid form. That's gone.

Yeah I exercise as well, doing two 90 minute sessions of hatha yoga per week, speed walking etc. There was another thread about yoga - I totally recommend it.

Just bought 'The art and science of low carbohydrate living' Volek and Phinney - looks interesting.

Good thread guys.

That's a good book, I have it.

Another benefit I noticed is there is little to no plaque buildup on my teeth. Anyone else experience this on low carb?

Well, I brush my teeth 2x a day.

Not sure about you, but I never see any plaque buildup since I brush 2x daily.

I know we tend to drink more beer than wine due to the lower alcohol content, but still... not a major difference right?
