I'm really interested in how the future of the internet and our online lifestyles will take shape over the next few decades. That and I shorted $FB at $22 a week or so ago, so I'm grabbing the popcorn for tomorrow's big event.

Anyway, Mark isn't shutting down his Facebook pages and deleting his account, but he pretty much admits his investment into Facebook as a traffic source and branding tool was more or less a waste.

He breaks it down Shark Tank style and I never knew this little bit:

"Facebook has never allowed 100% reach. I think the disconnect is that not everyone realized that they didnt allow 100% reach. I bet if you asked anyone who has subscribers if their posts reached 100% of their subscribers, they would say yes unless they have seen the dollar box for promoted posts show up."

As a business harvesting "likes", you're essentially building a list on Facebook. They aren't your friends, they're your customers. It's the ultimate opt in advertising and to think it should just be free is a bit retarded.

I get what you're saying, but just to play devil's advocate...

...It's FAR from the "ultimate" opt in advertising. You don't own that list. There is so much fucking noise on FB that even if your customers are raving fans, you're lucky to get 0.5% or so to pay attention to any messages that you send out.

You don't own those "likes". They could go away at anytime.

I agree that they have every right to charge for it. But a "like" on FB ain't a list. It is in a way. But I'd take email over FB likes any day of the week.

When you have a "list", you own those leads. When you have "likes", you have to pay to acquire them and pay to reach them.

I agree with what you're saying for the most part. But a "fanpage" and a "list" are two completely different ballgames.

You can't grow a list organically, but you can grow likes organically...
Mark is just pissed that he can't utilize all those likes, and hoping that his rant might have an impact on The Zerg.

Also LIKEs being easy to get, it is just a matter if scaling.. get more likes and then funnel them.. I own more than 10 Million fans, and I can pretty much ask them to do anything. Of course the reach have fallen drastically, but I can pretty much reach about 10% of my fans with every post or update.. I also get 700-800 email sign-ups a week from the Sign up button without any call to action except for the default sign up here. (Did away with call to action because FB discourages page owners to use the cover page as a call to action :-) )

Another good thing about the Fan is that whenever I create a new social profile, I can have hundreds of new likes, followers, +es, PINs etc, all real and responsive users... Not to mention that you can get these people to "like" and "share" your websites very very easily...
 
He said a lot of this in the final keynote at AdTech. Spot on... Everything spent to build your FB presence in the past now has a 20% effective reach, but sponsored posts are keeping FBs earnings in line.

Nature of the beast or bad idea, time will tell.

I don't think you get it bro.

When you send an email to your mailing list, does gmail ask you to pay for your email to land in all their inboxes? You can see how that would be unfair right? That's essentially what Facebook is doing.

Not only does it cost money for a business to acquire quality fans (most brands do it either thru Facebook Ads or by running viral contests/promos) but now you also have to pay Facebook to reach them with your status updates.

If you don't pay, you only reach 10 to 15% of your fanbase.

I'm with a Cuban. If a Facebook user Likes a brand, they are basically asking to see their updates. Facebook shouldn't stick their dick in the middle of this relationship and charge the page owners so that their messages reach the audience. It's pure robbery.

Facebook's main argument is that users don't like promotional/business/spammy updates in their feed. Yeah, but that's why they can UNLIKE those pages!
