Rand Paul will never get the nomination - the media will paint him as a racist for his stance on civil rights legislation and they'll never let that story die until the whole world is convinced he's a cross burning racist.

The thing about libertarians at the federal level is that if they want to be shifty they can be. He can say that he's against legalization and mean it but still be 'on our side.' You can be against legalization at the state level and still believe the federal government shouldn't be involved. Kicking it down to the state level would be a win for legalization proponents.
But who knows. Only thing I can do is keep an eye on his legislation. He's certainly no Ron Paul but that's a hard standard to live up to.
