Money In US Dollars - What To Do?

Looking good.

tencentpiece makes a really good point, the curency valuation is only part of the equation. Even if Australian dollar's valuation stays the same, if you can invest it @ 6% returns, that is a lot better than you'd do in US dollar-denominated investments, which are going to be far below 6% based on the current fed funds rate.

On the other side, as an American, your gains in currency/forex trading are subject to taxation as investment income. If it is a short-term gain (as most currency trades are) you are going to lose a big chunk of that upside under income/short term capital gains tax rates.

You know, if shit really hits the fan hard, I don't want to own some friggin' crops and be a slave to them. I want sharecroppers or serfs of some sort to do that hard work for me, in return for something that I stockpile now.

The only thing I can think I can stockpile now is their protection... And not just giving them a gun, because they can use that on me.... But a set of Highly-defend-able castle walls or something of the sort so that they feel safe and make sure I'm well fed so they can keep tending the crops.

Anyone got a real Compound that can defend their farmers from outside invaders?

If not it's going to be a shitty, shitty existence after the fall. Even if you have a billion dollars now, you can't be a King without a castle then.

Love it! and sooo jealous.. that garden isn't something that you can get overnight.

But only shotguns? Is that bolt action a 20 gauge or a rifle of some sort? looks like a 20. Don't get me wrong I'm a huge advocate of shotguns for home protection, but what about a rifle or two? And a handgun as well. My guess from that stash is that you have those as well.

Just curious - if you want to sell physical gold back and get cash for it, how much would a dealer or pawn shop buy it from you for in terms of gold's spot price? I would think a few percentage points below spot price?

Working on it. Got 3 acres with a house, servant's quarter, workshop and a pond up-country in Thailand. Planted gnarly thorn bushes around the perimeter that look attractive but are nasty if you try to go through them. Will be adding a chain link fence for a second layer of invader defense. Have a couple of big mean German Shepherds. Working on the guns and ammo - damn expensive in this country. Family members own land adjacent to us - in the future hoping they build homes and we extend the fences to encompass the whole lot. It doesn't look like a compound, just a comfortable up-country home, but it is easy to defend.

I think one problem with your approach is that those serfs won't stick around. If they have family homes in the country side they will run back to those if things get scary. So my emphasis is on minimum labor/effort to maintain everything.

I'm investing all my money in diamond cream.

It's like a million fucking diamonds!

Thanks for all the advice, I'm gonna start buying up gold/silver, and maybe putting some money in Swiss Francs, Australian dollars and maybe leveraged ETF's if I figure out what the hell they are. I wish I could build a castle and buy a bunch of guard dogs with rabies, but I don't think I'm close to that level yet. Definitely gave me some ideas to think about though.

Go Mark!

Sounds great. What makes it easily defendable? Is it on a hilltop with a steep cliff on one side or something?

Simply don't get the serfs Before the fall... (Or don't worry if you lose a few during the fall.)

Make the perfect compound first and you'll be beating serf-wannabes off with a stick when the time comes. For every 1 person that wants to go back to their old home to be with family, there will be 100 trying to find somewhere safe to live.

Build it and (after a fall) they shall come.

...Better yet; Landmines and Security traps.

Power generation would be the best, in fact; you could run security cameras and motion detectors if your battery is big enough.

On the power generation, seems like a backup diesel generator plus a barrel or two of diesel fuel is the way to go. Generator doesn't have to be huge, just enough to run vital equipment. And diesel can be stored for years without going bad.
