OH
So I was looking for some Xbox games today on Craigslist and come across this listing:

Xbox 360 Games - Used/Like-New - $15

I email the guy and ask him how much he wants for GH2 and the guitar. Here is what I get back:

Hey, thanks for the email! Ya i still have it, but I just put pics up on this site, it makes things way easier. Check it out.

h**p://www.Xbox-Universe.com
Now, I haven't messed with these phpBay sites at all but is anyone really seeing any conversions out of craigslist traffic on these sites?

UPDATE: Just tried to email back (gmail address) and see what kind of conversions they were getting. Its an automated email from a fake gmail address.

Using a bans or phpBay site is just retarded... if doing it though the email like this guy... why not shoot the interested party a link to a redirect page just going to ebay's home page? Still get the fucking cookie correct? Too much work just for a cookie. Not only are you relying on the user to click out of the e-mail to your site... but also relying on them clicking a product to get the cookie.

You want to just drop these somewhat less than savy intrawebz users off on ebay's home page and hope they don't click right back out? At least the bans or phpbay drops what their looking for in their lap. (theoretically)

agreed.
much more targeted this way.

This is a good point but I would think most Craigslisters are in an "I want this item today" kind of mode that auction times and shipping would ruin.

I think this approach would be a lot more successful if his niche was more specific - ex. I was looking for guitar hero 2, I click on his site and see Madden 08, Star Wars, etc.

Hell -- put the ads up. Respond to the first person saying you still have it -- then set up the redirect to e-bay listing for the same product for everyone else.... when the first person writes you back you send them there too.

I'd think it would work for damn near any product on e-bay.

That's what I was thinking. Wouldn't it be so much more effective if you sent them directly to the product you're advertising for?
1. You're guaranteed to set the cookie on them, and
2. They have a greater chance of buying something (as it's what they're actually looking for).

While the shipping I agree with, you can set it to only show auctions with a BIN. $$

You can deep link them to any product just using the ebay affiliate tools.

if you send deep links to people that post under "items wanted" are you taking a major risk with your EB account? this seems like such a no brainer too good 2b true scenario and being that i am new i am assuming there are problems with this strategerie. that or it doesnt convert well. i mean lets say you can bang out 200 of these targeted emails a day.... comments (respective to account risk and conversion viability) on this from anyone with experience is appreciated

How many people use ebay? A fucking shit ton.
Hes using a popular product with super low prices to get traffic.
Half the people that land on that BANS or PHPbay page are going to bounce - if not more... probably more like 80-95%.
Now, of those 80-95% that would bounce from the page - if he was sending them directly to the ebay home page through his affiliate link, or to a custom tailored page only displaying the products in question - he sets the cookie.

Run mass traffic to it and it will work.

Isnt that what he's doing?

No, the site he is directing people to, h**p://www.Xbox-Universe.com

Is just a site that is set up with the listing widget dealy, I forget what its proper name is.

Simply put, he is depending on the user (1) Clicking the link he sends them in the email and (2) clicking on one of the links on his page to go to eBay (setting the cookie)

I'm talking something more along the lines of a redirect.

Something like this

But instead of going to the sign up page, it would take them to the video game search results, sorted by price, etc. This can be done easily using the flexible destination tool. This is what ebay allows you to use to make an affiliate link out of ANY page you navigate to on ebay.

Where is this "flexible destination tool"? I haven't found anything useful in the ebay affiliate tools, not like there was in CJ...

It doesn't matter where you drop them, set the cookie the instant they get there. It's not tough people. Search G for "cookie stuffing" and you'll find the answer in a matter of minutes (seconds probably)

Tools > Link Generator > LINK TYPE: "Custom URL" > Paste URL > Select eBay US Program > Fill in extras if needed.
