I have talked to a lot of people that send traffic to dating sites. Big and small alike. There seems to be a debate as to what is the most effective method. A lead style page that API posts to a dating site vs. sending the end user directly to the fancy front end of a dating site and that converting best. What has been the most effective method for you?

Depends on each provider and what you're hoping to get. Test each approach out. I do CPS fwiw but do not send right to dating site/direct link.
API could let you catch their info and remarket to several sites, say 1 up front, then build trust to the user and warm them up to some other sites + dating ebooks. I'm planning to try this approach out more.
Depends on your promotion method too. PPV would make a good lead capture + API remarket.

The question is are you capable of doing 2 things:
1. Can you build a more highly converting landing page than the dating site you are sending to?
2. Are you ready to effectively work a list that you build while capturing leads?
If so then get to it. If not then spend more time sending traffic so you can learn what converts and where.
A lot of people make the mistake of trying to host their own only to see their ratio go to hell in the process compared to the ratios they had sending directly to the site.
But if you really want to do this, you might as well go all the way and create a white label with Easydate or World Dating Partners and cultivate that on the side while you figure it all out. Most people don't know that a few of the dating sites that are being offered in the networks are just white labels with these companies.
